Hello Holland Park and Happy Summer!

Bike Trail Construction It took a long while?… however a special thanks goes to all of the contractors that completed the bike trail and storm water construction project. The 24?” wastewater pipe has been laid, the storm drain has been cleared of the downed trees, and repairs are near complete. It?’s refreshing to see the attention be paid to our little patch of open space.

Recently HPCA held our semi-annual Bike Trail Clean-up on 4-25-09 for Earth Day. The weather was cool and a little damp. Thank you to the 15 or so people that came out to clean the trail from N. Chestnut all the way up to the Centennial Tunnel. Volunteers also cleaned-up Jackson Park. A big thanks goes to Albertson?’s for providing our lunch again this year. In total 49 bags of garbage and 4 shopping carts were hauled away the following Monday by Colorado Springs, Parks and Rec.

Thank you, Thank you for making a difference in Holland Park!

Continuing Events

Many people have contacted me over the past year and have told me they really enjoyed the events that have taken place the past 4 years. We wish to continue with these new traditions and grow as a strong community but things can only happen if we all pull together. We really NEED help with YOUR TIME, ENERGY and FINANCIAL support to continue the community activities this year.

WE NEED NEW BOARD MEMBERS. The core board of 5 people has grown very tired and are in rout of retirement. Please if you have the ability come forward and join the board.

Last year, HPCA held 2 Bike Trail clean-ups, 1 Garage Sale, Partnered with the Springs City Church with their BBQ and 1Music in the Park. We spent ALL of the money in the Association's account. In order to continue these types of events, it cost money for advertising, food, entertainment and permits. This is for all of the community, YOUR community. Thank you for participating.

Membership

Of the 300 that I've met in our neighborhood and have come to participate in the events the past few years HPCA currently has 7 paid memberships for 2009. (Few have generously given more this year, thank you.) A ten-dollar minimum Annual Membership is due the first of each year. Please help us by supporting your community. Send your tax deductable donation checks to: HPCA, 1309 Holland Park Blvd. - Marcia Boutz, our treasurer.

Imagine what we could do if each of the 1200 homes were paid members?

Calendar - Save the Date

The 3rd annual Community Garage Sale WEEKEND this year will be on Saturday June 13th and Sunday June 14th, at your home. (Rain date will be the following weekend.) I will be contacting Salvation Army to try to schedule another pick-up at Jackson Elementary School afterward at the Northeast parking lot of the school. That seemed to work well last year. I would like to have the truck pick up Sunday after you have another opportunity to sell the things that you didn?’t sell on Saturday. I will let you know what time the truck will be there on Sunday June 14th. Preferably around 2:00 pm.

National Night Out Tuesday August 4th, 2009. Goals for the evening are as follows:

Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts.
Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.
Send a message to criminals letting them know that our neighborhood is organized and fighting back.

Music in the Park was a success last year! We would like to have another event at Jackson Park, providing we have enough funds to pay for a band and provide a bathroom again. We will try to set for the second weekend of September on the 12th from 5:00 to 7:00. (Rain date scheduled for the following weekend.) We have asked John-Alex Mason to come back, if he is available.

2nd Bike Trail Clean up We have not set a date for the second clean up. Typically it?’s in the FALL before the first snow. Clean up will take place in October.

TAKE the opportunity to get to know your neighbors, now is the time to talk to them about building up Holland Park's Community. Because we all know that a strong community is a safe community. Burglars and riff-raff will not grow, if we are watching out for each other. Property values will grow if we invest in the upkeep of our homes and surrounding spaces.

Make an effort. Please come and participate in getting to know your neighborhood. Thank you to those of you that continue to pick up debris on your daily walks. It is noticed and appreciated.
