Hollygrove Neighbors

August 19 meeting

Results of Aug 19 meeting

Thanks to everyone who attended the HOLLYGROVE NEIGHBORS General meeting on Saturday August 19 at 12 noon at the Xavier University Center.

Special thanks to our guests, Second District’s Lt. Eddie Selvy, District A Councilman Shelly Midura and Councilman Fielkow’s representative Broderick Green

Attendees heard about the HGN successful Night Out Against Crime, held Aug. 1 at Conrad Park; the Aug 12 Drainage Meeting at Conrad Park run by Alex Morgan of Councilman Midura’s office; and the Neighborhood Clean Ups that have been taking place since July and the upcoming Clean Up on Saturday Aug 26 starting at Earhart & Hollygrove.

Residents were asked to nominate the top 5 worst streets in the neighborhood. While we know MOST of the streets need repair, we need to determine which should have the priority, based on usage and condition. We will give this information to Councilman Midura.

--Jean Fisher of Carrollton United shared information on voting deadlines and the new Priestly school.

Guests: Lt. Selvy and Councilman Midura

Lt. Selvy gave an overview of crime in the Hollygrove area. At this time crime is down in our area. However Lt Selvy is aware that crime is creeping back, especially drug related crime. An 18 member task force is assigned to our area. He gave his cell phone (234-8072) for residents to report any problems.

HOLLYGROVE NEIGHBORS is looking for several residents to be a part of the “Crime Committee” and commit to attending the monthly NOMPAC meetings on the third Tuesday of the month at Touro Hospital.

Councilman Midura had several announcements for the neighborhood.

--The council is sponsoring a Crime Summit – addressing problems – lack of space, turnover of criminals etc. More info to come.
--Regarding the Monticello Canal protection that residents in Hollygrove and Palm Air are demanding, Midura will meet this week with Jefferson’s Aaron Broussard and the New Orleans S&WB to work towards a solution that makes everyone feel safe.
--Midura is looking for neighborhood input on the Carrollton Shopping Center ; She is in contact with the owner; she would like to know what types of stores the residents would like to see – email your suggestions to (HollygroveNeighbors@yahoo.com).
--Walgreens at Carrollton and Claiborne – The developers are putting up a fence and will demolish the existing building;
--Midura wants to create an inspector General office in city hall to reduce fraud, waste and mismanagement. She is asking for support from the residents.
--Due to a large volume of complaints form resident regarding the trash pickup – Midura and her staff have followed up with the Sanitation dept. and Waste Management. She will be looking closely at trash collection issues and is looking for ‘watchers’ from every neighborhood to assist. Those watchers will report to her office any missed pickups and other trash related problems
--The AFL-CIO has a carpenter training program that is seeking participants; More information will be available at Saturday’s clean up. Also information on scholarships at the Louisiana Technology Institute will be available.
--Residents are asked to contact Midura’s office for problems with rats; Claudia Riegal is managing a free program for mosquito, termite and rodent control.
