10-Year-Old Killed While Crossing the Street

SANTA ANA ?— Police Monday sought witnesses to a hit-and-run accident that killed a 10-year-old Santa Ana boy who was crossing in the middle of the block when struck by a light blue-over-brown minivan.
The boy, whose name was not immediately released, was crossing in the 800 block of South Raitt Street around 7:45 last night when he was struck by the two-tone Chevrolet Astro van whose driver did not stop, said Santa Ana police Sgt. Carlos Rojas.
A motorist who witnessed the accident followed the van for about a quarter- mile, to McFadden Avenue and Sullivan Street, where the driver was last seen going north, Rojas said.
The boy was visiting family members in the area of densely populated apartments, and it was not immediately known where he was going when he crossed busy Raitt Street in the middle of the block, Rojas said.
The youngster was taken to UCI Medical Center and pronounced dead later in the evening, Rojas said.
Police hope that someone else on the busy street saw the accident and will be able to provide additional information that helps identify the suspect, Rojas said.
The driver of the van, who may have had a passenger, apparently did not try to get away from the motorist that was following, Rojas said.
It was not immediately known if the van was damaged or had been exceeding the speed limit, which is 35 to 40 mph where the boy was struck, the sergeant said.
Anyone with information on the accident was asked to call Investigator James Berwanger at (714) 245-8216.
