I-64 PROPOSED WIDENING

Jul 03, 2001

There have been many city-wide meetings pertaining to the proposed widening of I-64. Your Board Of Directors has taken the official stance that we oppose any widening and want alternative avenues of transportation explored such as light rail or HOV lanes.

In response to a letter written to Governor Patton by one of our directors, James C. Codell, Secretary of Transportation, responded as follows: ?“?….Through the KIPDA MPO transportation planning process, the need to improve safety and mobility within the I-64 Corridor has been identified as a priority. Although the Cabinet does not have this capacity expansion project in our current Six Year Highway Plan, we expect it to be considered for funding for future Six Year Highway Plans?…..?”

Our Alderwoman has been active in opposing this. $10,000 was appropriated from the First Ward to CART (Coalition for the Advancement of Regional Transportation) in order to hire someone and give full attention to the issues that we are facing currently, being the widening of I-64. Rep. Marzian has agreed to schedule a meeting with Governor Patton in July to discuss the proposed widening as well as the proposal of using rubberized asphalt on the resurfacing. This type of asphalt produces less noise from tires as they move on it and should help cut down on vehicular noise for those properties
close to this interstate.

If you are interested in participating in the on-going effort to remove this project from the Horizon 2020 plan, please contact CART at 589-2278 and/or email Tina Ward-Pugh at TWARDPUCH@LOUKY.ORG
