On Friday, August 15th, Lawton Heights/Zone 1 was honored at the 3rd Annual Oklahoma Neighborhood Conference with the ?“Neighborhood Improvement?” award. This award recognizes groups that have improved social, physical, and/or economic conditions in their neighborhoods.
Zone 1 was recognized for its efforts to rid our area of prostitutes, drug dealers and gang activity.
But the most important reward is hearing that the crime rate statistics have improved dramatically in the past year, according to Police Chief Harold Thorne, who nominated Zone 1 for this award.
Later that evening Chief of Police Harold Thorne was recognized for his contribution to city improvement
The Neighborhood Conference was attended by Suzy and Jack Glover, Kay and Gary Ferrell, and Khris Kenyon of Zone 1. Also attending from Lawton were Chief and Mrs. Thorne, M.O. and Mrs. R.L. Smith, M.O. David Williams, and M.O. Gerald Nooner of the LPD and 20 representatives of five of Lawton?’s other watch groups.
Saturday the 16th was a full day of workshops such as ?“Racial and Ethnic Diversity?”, ?“Dick Tracy 101?”, ?“Homeland Defense?”, ?“Barney Fife & a Bullet?”, ?“Gangs: Community Crisis?”, ?“Begging for Dollars?”, ?“Working Together: Neighborhoods and City Hall?”. LPD Sentinel Connie Leary gave a workshop on ?“Volunteers in Police Service?”.
