The LeConte Neighborhood Association requested, suggested locations and helped design traffic circles for two intersections in our district. They were installed late in 1999 and planted with Dawn Redwood Trees.
Volunteers living near the intersections of Stuart/Ellsworth and Parker/Ellsworth provided bolders and plants and water during the dry months.
Studies have recently shown that traffic circles aren't just attractive, emphasizing the residential character of neighborhood, but also reduce traffic accidents and injuries
In order to honor and memorialize local residents who passed away in recent years, donations were accepted by LeConte for landscaping our circle.
Family members and neighbors held a brief ceremony in May 0f 2000 to remember the following: Chio Yamada,
Fred Dengler and Mrs. Loke of the 2200 block of Stuart St. and John Coleman of the 2800 Block of Ellsworth St.
When the City Council approved funding for the first two circles, our association sought to reduce the cost for installation by eliminating irrigation and agreeing to plant, water and maintain these areas.
This was with the understanding that the extra money would be used toward additional circles.
Finally, after two years we have "found" the lost funds and are proceeding to install another circle at Ellsworth & Carleton.
Ellsworth is one of the few streets without sidewalk strips and street trees. This location was also the only one requested by a group of residents willing to plant water and maintain.
Future locations for additional circles are being considered.
