In April, 2001 more than a dozen neighbors and staff began clearing and planting to attract and sustain the larvae that will become butterflies.
A grant proposal was made by Sue Fischer with the help of Andy Liu-a butterfly expert. The City of Berkeley responded with $3,300 to transform the area outside the zigzag fence at the corner of Ellsworth & Russell Streets.
The next work party will be Saturday, May 12 from 9:30 to noon.
Brad Richards with Berkeley Parks Maintenance is holding the files that would allow the City to issue payment of the Butterfly Grant awarded last year. LeConte NA is prepared to accept the $3,300 when a committee is formed by the school and/or the PTA to design the necessary signs and follow through in maintaining the plantings. To get involved contact the school at 644-6290 or Patricia_Saddler@berkeley.k12.ca.us.
