Lincoln Log - Fall 2003

The Lincoln Log Fall 2003
Published quarterly, for members of the Lincoln Village Neighborhood Association

The summer months are coming to a close with this writing, I hope to find everyone in good health and spirits. I want to start off by bringing a few things to your attention when enjoying the outside.
Two of the most enjoyable activities are walking and hiking, here are some safety tips to remember:
?• Always bring a friend or loved one to enjoy the outdoors with you, there is safety in numbers.
?• If it is becoming close to dark prior to your walk, bring a flashlight along.
?• Avoid poorly lit areas.
?• Do not take shortcuts.
?• Most of all remain alert and aware of your surroundings.
The next item on the agenda is the stop sign located at Standridge and Newberry. Many of you were able to meet me over the last few months because of this sign. I cannot stress enough the importance of stopping at this location. Those who live in this area are very frustrated and concerned at the lack of consideration when it comes to their children playing in the area and rightly so. So, once again, stop at the stop sign and give some respect to the children in the area, you aren?’t in that much of a hurry.
Being in a hurry brings me to the next subject, speeding. We have been stopping a lot of persons on Coldwater, Cook and Wallen Roads for speeding. I have also stopped many persons for speeding on Valdosta and Standridge and found that the majority of the answers were ?“sorry, I?’m just in a hurry?”. I can understand that answer, but it is still illegal and expensive.
I received a disturbing phone call from your Board President, Phil Moehle, the other day, stating that some juveniles had vandalized the north common area in your community. This is truly a serious matter. I assure you that the proper steps will be taken and those responsible will answer for their actions. There has already been good information given about this crime, enough to gain identification in regards to some of those involved, but more is always needed. If anyone witnessed this please call the Fort Wayne Police Dept.
Each time that I hear of these crimes being committed, it is through either Phil Moehle, or Rosy O?’Grady. I understand that most of you hold back on calling the Police Dept. because of ?“not wanting to bother?” us with trivial matters. I assure you that vandalism is not trivial and the more that you report these things, whether the officer actually takes a report or not, it allows me to track the crime through the computer system. It is beneficial to us and it allows us to catch more criminals that way.
Thank you for your support.

Lincoln Village Annual Meeting and Family Picnic

Everyone is invited!
Just bring your family, the food and drinks will be provided by the Lincoln Village Assoc.
Saturday, September 6th, 2:30-4:00 p.m. the Lincoln Village Annual Picnic and Meeting will take place at the common area next to the tennis courts. It?’s a great time to get to know your neighbors and see who has served on the Assoc. Board this past year. There are a couple of vacancies on the Board that need to be filled. Please think about serving your community in this capacity.

Attention New Lincoln Village Neighbors! Please fill out the new neighbors form below and return it to the Lincoln Village P.O. Box listed in the newsletter so that you can be welcomed to the neighborhood by the Welcoming Committee.

FYI
This column is dedicated to keeping people better informed.

The Scoop on the Poop!
Walking on the paved walkways through the woods, around the lake and common areas in our neighborhood is a wonderful way to get some exercise. But, dodging doggie poop and sometimes stepping in it is not so enjoyable. Please respect others and Clean Up After Your Dog!!

Call 911
Don?’t waste precious time whenever you witness a crime from vandalism to break-ins?…Call 911!! Give the police a description and tell them to send help immediately, that?’s their job. Don?’t second guess the police or give law-breakers a chance.

Watch for school children and buses!
It?’s back to school time and we must be careful of children both walking and riding buses. Teach traffic safety to your children so they can do their part too.

Recycling cardboard
To keep cardboard from going into our landfills, where it takes years to break down, Recycle!! Place any cardboard in the brown bin and for larger boxes, break down and bundle. For other questions on recycling, please call Solid Waste at 427-1270.

Monthly Board Meetings
Our board meets at 7:30 p.m. the second Monday of each month, at the Resurrection Lutheran Church, on the corner of Coldwater and Cook Roads. The exception is the month of Sept. when we will have a general meeting at the annual picnic.

Plans to develop land on the corner of Wallen and Coldwater

Prior to our regular monthly board meeting on July 14th, a presentation was made by CB Ellis representatives regarding their plans for developing the corner of Wallen and Coldwater Roads. There were approximately thirty people attending from Hunter?’s Knoll, Newberry and Lincoln Village associations. This 18.8 acre parcel of land belonged to the Myers family.
Plans call for six parcels of land consisting of office/retail and on the corner a filling station. This development would call for rezoning from R1 to CM2. There would also be a three acre retention pond to hold back water in heavy rainfalls caused by the new buildings and blacktop parking areas.
Concerns of increased traffic and increased drainage problems were voiced by the group, particularly since we already experience heavy drainage into our North Pond. The Beckman Ditch is supposed to move the water down-line through Manor Park, but because of only a one inch fall, water stays in the pond causing some flooding and erosion. Recently, surface water from that property runs into backyards on Stand Ridge and into that storm drain there and is carried to the North Pond. The North Pond was intended to carry away surface water for Lincoln Village only and would have to be monitored for flooding or any other problems.
The traffic, noise and lights present at filling stations, are a concern to the neighbors, who feel that they will impact several neighborhoods adversely.
No plans have been presented to the Planning Board or Zoning as yet but the developers think there will be a hearing as early as September. Third Dist. Councilman Tom Henry was present on behalf of the residents and asked many pertinent questions.
