Two Tampa Police Officers Killed in the Line of Duty |
June 29, 2010 - **update on search for suspects that killed two Tampa Police Officers Detectives are looking for two persons of interest in the shooting deaths of two Tampa Police Officers. Detectives believe these persons of interest were at the scene of the shooting this morning and they are wanted for questioning. Person of Interest 1: Dontae Rashawn Morris, B/M, 08/24/1985, no known address Person of Interest 2: Cortnee Nicole Brantly, B/F, 02/15/1988, no known address The search perimeter is now a search for evidence. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is helping with the search and has set up a unified command post. Tampa Police Detectives are working on several leads in Tampa, but are also working on a state-wide search. Tampa Police Officers are utilizing uniform patrol, undercover officers, K-9 and Air Service. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is also providing deputies. 31 year old David Curtis has three years and eight months of service to the Tampa Police Department. He is married with four sons between the ages of eight months and nine years. He served with HCSO as a jail deputy prior to becoming a Tampa Police Officer. Officer Curtis is known as a family man, devoted to his wife and four sons. His sons are 8-month Hunter, 5 year old Tyler, 6 year old Sean and 9 year old Austin. He is an outstanding Tampa Police Officer who served on the plain clothes Rapid Offender Control Squad known as ROC for one year, but was serving in uniform patrol at the time of the shooting. 31 year old Jeffrey Kocab has nearly 14 months as a Tampa Police Officer. He is married and his wife who is nine months pregnant. He served with the Plant City Police Department prior to being hired by Tampa Police. Officer Kocab moved through TPD's training program at an accelerated pace because of his outstanding police skills. He was anticipating the birth of his first child next week. Both officers are on uniform patrol squad 306. Suspect 1 (passenger): B/M, mid to late 20s, 5'10, 150-170, one inch afro, Last seen wearing brown shorts, white T-shirt, black vest, white sneakers Suspect 2 (driver): Light skinned black female Suspect Vehicle: 1994 Red Toyota Camry, no tag At 2:15 a.m. Officer David Curtis attempted to pull over a vehicle and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and 50th Street. The car had no license plate. The vehicle eventually pulled over at 50th Street and 23rd Avenue. Officer Curtis determined the passenger was wanted on a worthless check warrant out of Jacksonville. He called for backup and Officer Jeffrey Kocab arrived. Together they approached the suspect's vehicle on the passenger side. The next communication came from a citizen calling 911 to report two officers were shot. The first responding officers found Officer Curtis and Officer Kocab on the ground and immediately began CPR. They were transported by ambulance to Tampa General Hospital. Officer Kocab was pronounced dead shortly after arrival to the hospital. Doctors put Officer Curtis on life support he died a short time later. Officers still have a perimeter set up from MLK to I4, 40th Street to 50th Street. Officers have an extensive search for evidence in the perimeter. The search for the suspect extends state-wide. The suspects are considered armed and very dangerous.
