Accepting Oneness

Dec 18, 2009

From Page 62:

?“This awakening is so unique an experience that by comparison the sharpest natural experience is like sleep. It is awakening to the full possession of God, whom we yet possess in the darkness.

For ?‘our minds are most truly liberated from the weak lights, that are darkness in comparison to Him. It?’s then that we are filled with His infinite Light, which is pure darkness to us.'"

In the darkness, the last vestiges of selfishness are taken away. ?‘The deep and secret selfishness that is too close for us to identify is stripped away from our souls, and in the darkness, we are made free. The darkness becomes an atmosphere of breathless clarity in which we find peace, and the deep night becomes the brightness of the noonday sun, in which we find the One whom alone our heart desires.

And, we find ourselves on the threshold of a totally new experience, where we are no longer subjects of an experience but are the experience itself.

The duality between God and us disappears. Merton attempts to clarify what this means: ?‘What happens is that the separate entity, that was you, suddenly disappears and nothing is left but a pure freedom indistinguishable from infinite Freedom.

Love identified with Love. Not two loves, one waiting for the other, striving for the other, but Love Loving in Freedom.

Contemplation finally becomes what it is really meant to be. ?‘It is no longer something poured out of God into a created subject, so much as God living in God and identifying a created life with His own Life so that there is nothing left of any significance but God living in God.'"
