Dunnigan Macllwaine, Membership Director
LDDI Personal Profile by Laurie Rachkus Uttich
He's not the only person who's been drawn to LoDo because of its history. But he just might be the first real history buff who actually reads history books (for fun!), claims his favorite movie was the recent TBS documentary, There Was a Time ?… the History of Denver, and finds it amazing that he actually gets paid to help preserve and protect the historic district of Lower Downtown.
Dunnigan Macllwaine, LDDI's newest membership director, brings with his love of history a list of experience in non-profit organizations that's as varied as his interests.
"I've made the choice to work with non-profit groups, because I enjoy the dedication that I find in those who work and volunteer for causes they believe in," says Dunnigan. "It just suits my personality."
It seems LDDI suits more than his personality. It suits his passion. As Dunnigan continues to study the history of LoDo, he hopes to have a small part of making history. " No one knows what LoDo will look like 20 years from now," he says. "I want to be a person that helps it remain a place where people want to live, work and grow their business."
What do you like best about Colorado?
I love the climate. I miss the ocean (I'm from Portland, Maine), but the weather and mountains are beautiful.
What do you do on the weekends?
My wife and I have a 16-month son, lan, and we're expecting another son, Graeme, in November. So, right now we try to find a balance between working around the house and getting out and having fun.
What is "getting out and having fun?"
My wife and I like the Scottish Highland Games so we usually look for a festival in the area and attend the athletic events.
We especially like the event "caber tossing." It's basically the equivalent of throwing a telephone pole.
What's your favorite book?
I like a lot of historical nonfiction, but the best book I recently read was "Becoming a Breakthrough Team Player."
What's your philosophy of life?
People are Number 1. There's no more important commodity on the face of the earth.
What do you hope to do for LDDI?
My main goal is to help ensure that LDDI grows with LoDo ?… to really keep step with the changes and become the primary source for information about issues and actions.
