In the 1970's, Charlotte joined the nationwide program
administered by FEMA that maps the floodplains, regulates any further
development of them, and provides subsidized flood insurance to existing
occupants of the floodplain.
You may recall that several weeks ago, representatives of FEMA made a
presentation to the City Council, recognizing that our community has
reached a high level of floodplain management, a level which results in
significantly discounted rates for flood insurance in the regulated
floodplains.
You may also recall that there have recently been residents of the
Chantilly neighborhood objecting to floodplain regulations that would
restrict their ability to expand and renovate homes in the floodplain,
actions that increase their economic risk during floods and increase the
financial risk to the nationwide flood insurance program. City and
County staff are working through that discussion with the folks in
Chantilly, and it will be coming back to the City Council in the coming
months.
