Last year, police found a long line of people waiting outside the front door on the first day of their clothing and school supplies program for children in need in west and southwest Charlotte.
So the fourth annual Westover Clothes Closet, sponsored and operated by officers and other staff members of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police's Westover Division, is moving to bigger quarters.
And the need is bigger than ever.
Police are asking for donations of clothing and school supplies by July 27, so they will have time to organize the items before the closet opens in early August.
''We served more than 300 children last year, and we think the need is bigger this year,'' said Gina Black, a technician with the Westover Division, which serves parts of west, southwest and south Charlotte.
The Westover Clothes Closet was started by the division's former commander, Capt. Vicki Foster, and operated the first three years from the division headquarters on West Boulevard. This year, the program is moving to Second Calvary Baptist Church's fellowship hall at 114 Nelson Avenue, off Rozzelles Ferry Road.
''We simply needed bigger quarters,'' Black said.
The biggest need is for school uniforms.
''A lot of the schools in our area are going to uniforms,'' Black said.
Also needed are shoes, new underwear, other clothing items, toiletries and book bags.
''And we always can use school supplies,'' Black said.
In past years, police officers from the Westover and other divisions have contributed their own money to buy supplies, because there never seems to be enough.
''We're not thinking strictly in terms of younger children's clothing,'' Black said. ''Some of the children are bigger than us. So any sizes are appreciated.''
As was the case last year, the Westover Clothes Closet will operate the first two or three days for children in the Westover Division. Then it will be open to all families.

Clothing, book bags and other school supplies can be dropped off at the Westover Division office, 1540 West Blvd. Or donors can contact Gina Black at 704-432-3004. Donations are needed by July 27. The Westover Clothes Closet will operate Aug. 5-11. Hours will be announced later.
