On December 11, 2007, Burke County Narcotics Deputy Martin Lawing was shot and paralyzed during a SWAT operation to remove a barricaded woman subject to an involuntary commitment order. This tragedy has put a severe financial strain on Martin's family. Martin is married and the proud father of a two year old child.
Martin is an accomplished marathoner, bike rider and overall athlete. For that reason we thought it would be appropriate to sponsor a 5K run/walk to raise money to help Martin's family during this very difficult time. Trophies for first, second and third place for men and women will be awarded.
The race will start at 12:30 pm on Friday, February 15, 2008. Please arrive before then in order to register.

Entry Fee: $25.00
Liability Waiver: Attached-must be signed
Participants can register on race day or in advance. Please make checks payable to FOP/Lodge 23 and write Martin Lawing Fund in the memo portion of the check. 100% of the funds raised will go to the Lawing family. Those registering in advance should send checks to the Drug Enforcement Administration/Attn: Diana Summers, 6324 Fairview Rd, Suite 575, Charlotte, NC 28210. Please sign the attached waiver and include it with your check.
We are trying to get an estimate of the number of participants so that we will have an adequate supply of donated water on hand for after the race. Please email Diana Summers at diana.l.summers@usdoj.gov if you plan on participating.
