Neighbor concerned with Raccoon spotted during the day.

Posted in: Madison Park

I had a message from a neighbor concerned she had just seen a raccoon during the day.   Here is what I found out about Raccoons and daytime.  I have personally only seen them at night so decided to check into it.  According to an article I just read it said.

Just because a raccoon is seen in daytime does not mean it is rabid. Mother raccoons sometimes forage during the day when they are nursing babies. Only if an adult raccoon seen in the daytime is showing abnormal behaviors such as paralysis, unprovoked aggression, moving in circles, self-mutilation, making screeching sounds, or showing supreme tameness should you call your local animal control officer or police department.

I guess the rain kept them in the last few days.

Here is a second article link on raccoons.

Raccoons -- Facts and Fancies

Wildlife Rescue League's Rescue Report

Raccoons are mostly nocturnal. Another myth about them says if they are seen out in the daytime, they must be rabid. It is quite common, especially in urban areas, for a healthy animal to venture out during the day if it is hungry or its den has been destroyed. Frequently, mother raccoons that are nursing kits will be forced to search for food night and day. If an animal is behaving normally in the daytime, it is probably not rabid and should be left alone.

A Neighbor in the same area as the raccoon was spotted said her Orkin man found one dead in her shrubs this am.

The city came out and removed it.

I am guessing they will check it for rabies.  If it turns up rabid and we hear back we will post it on our site.
