NEIGHBORHOOD SYMPOSIUM - IT'S FREE! The 14th Annual Neighborhood symposium will be held on Saturday, May 16th at the Charlotte Convention Center. This popular event begins at 7:45 AM with coffee and registration and ends at 3:00 PM. Residents of Charlotte who want to know how to improve their neighborhood are encouraged to attend this free event. Participants will attend a variety of workshops, a community forum and have the opportunity to network and share ideas on topics as safety, affordable housing, accessible transportation, code enforcement, and well managed neighborhood organizations. A parallel track for youth, ages 12-18 will focus on summer employment opportunities, healthy relationships and teen violence. A box lunch is provided. CHARLOTTEANS ENCOURAGED TO PROTECT MOTHER EARTH Visit the City's new Environmental Web Site to learn what you can do to protect our air, water and land. You can also learn about the City's environmental initiatives, including direct links to City and County agencies and programs. You will find the new "Pledge to Improve our Environment" which encourages residents take certain actions in their daily living such as replacing light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, taking shorter showers to reduce water consumption, and using coffee mugs instead of Styrofoam cups. The Pledge is also printed on wallet sized cards, which are available by calling the Corporate Communications Office, 704-336-2396. Visit www.charlottenc.gov and click on Focus on the Environment to learn more. SPRING BRINGS FLOWERS, SHOWERS AND ..... POTHOLES!Water seeps through asphalt pavement, freezes in winter temperatures, expands, and BAM, we have a spring pothole. These can be both dangerous and irritating. The City of Charlotte maintains 2300 miles of streets, but has a goal of repairing dangerous potholes in 24 hours and all others within 10 days of identification. Please report potholes by calling 311. Give the exact pothole location, including the road name, block number and closest cross street. The 311 operator will report it to the Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) or NC Department of Transportation, which maintains major roads as Independence Blvd., Providence Road, Tryon Street, Monroe Road Albemarle Road and others. MECKDEC DAY IS MAY 20TH Celebrate the 234th Anniversary of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence on May 20th by attending the May 20th Society's Speaker Series featuring historian Dorris Kearns Goodwin. The event will be at the McGlohon Theatre at 7:00 PM. Tickets are sold through www.carolinatix.org. What are we celebrating? On May 20, 1775, a full year before the rest of the colonies united, the colonists of Mecklenburg County, NC, declared independence from the Crown of England. We've always been ahead of our time! |
