Homeownership Center of Charlotte Conducts Workshop On President's
Making Home Affordable Initiative

CHARLOTTE - The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership, Inc.'s (The Housing Partnership) Homeownership Center of Charlotte will be conducting a workshop on President Obama's Making Home Affordable initiative Tuesday, June 9, 2009. Making Home Affordable is a plan to stabilize the U.S. housing market and help up to 7 to 9 million Americans reduce their monthly mortgage payments to more affordable levels. The Homeownership Center is conducting this workshop to help Charlotte residents understand who will be served under the Making Home Affordable program, what the guidelines are and what information is necessary in order to apply.

"We're going to present the Making Home Affordable information in an easy-to-understand format," said Ralphine Caldwell, Senior Vice President of Homeownership for The Housing Partnership.  "We want all who attend to walk away knowing exactly how this program can benefit them."

Caldwell warns distressed homeowners to beware of foreclosure rescue scams, which have increased with the high foreclosure rate: "Legitimate help is free." The Homeownership Center offers free financial counseling and HUD-approved pre-homeownership education and foreclosure intervention counseling. To date, more than 12,000 families have participated in these services. The need for foreclosure intervention counseling was recently illustrated at the Charlotte HOPE NOW event in April, where Caldwell and her staff worked alongside peer organizations to assist over 500 borrowers who attended the one-day event. The Homeownership Center works with peer organizations locally as well as nationally through NeighborWorks® America, North Carolina Housing Finance Agency, the HOPE NOW Alliance and the Housing Partnership Network.

Anyone who is currently facing delinquency on their mortgage or who has been unsuccessful refinancing is encouraged to attend the workshop. "Don't wait until you're out of options," says Caldwell. "The time to find solutions is now." The workshop is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. at The Housing Partnership's office at 4601 Charlotte Park Drive, Suite 350 in Southwest Charlotte by Billy Graham and South Tryon Streets. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. To register, call (704) 342-0933.
