PARTY NEWS

From the Chair

The Democratic Party is the oldest political party in continuous operation in the United States and one of the oldest parties in the world. In 1832, the Democratic Party held its first National Convention and we were there.

In 2004, you helped us turn Mecklenburg County BLUE – by carrying our county for a Democratic President for the first time since FDR. In 2008, we solidified our importance to the Democratic Party by:

  • The election of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden
  • The victories of Governor Bev Perdue, Senator Kay Hagen, and Larry Kissell
  • The election of a 6-3 Democratic County Commission and a Democrat as Register of Deeds (defeating a longtime Republican)
BUT the Mecklenburg County Democratic Party’s proud history might soon fade
We need your help to continue to maintain a viable and visible presence. Without your immediate assistance, we could be closing our doors, turning out the lights, and shutting down our web.
You can prevent this by joining our new program – The 177 Club – named in commemoration of the first Democratic Convention in 1832.We seek One Hundred and Seventy- Seven Leaders who will help commemorate the ONE HUNDRED and SEVENTY-SEVEN YEARS that our Democratic Party has been here to serve.

HOW?  Three levels of Sponsorship: RED, WHITE, and BLUE.

  • Red Level – our “Core Team”: To keep the doors open, the lights on, and the website live, our 177 Core Team Members will give $10 per month. This $1770.00 covers our base operating expenses.
  • White Level - our “Political Operatives”: The $10 per week these loyal Democrats will pledge will cover our Primary Voter Guide and initial GOTV efforts.
  • Blue Level – our “Leaders”: The $100 per month from our 177 leaders will provide the resources we need to achieve victory in November and the strategic positioning for future success.

We must not let the power and glory which led us to historic victories in 2004 and 2008 be diminished

We registered a lot of new and 1st time voters in 2008. Continuing to harness the energy of these new voters will require significant resources from people like you. People willing to give the gift of time and money.

We know that times are hard. However, we need to think of the consequences to ordinary people if we don’t maintain the Democratic Party’s momentum from 2008.
In addition to keeping our doors open, we need money to do the following:
  • Produce a primary voter guide to let our candidates get their message out to all Democrats in the City of Charlotte at the lowest possible cost.
  • Produce a general election voter guide (our 2008 voter guide was an overwhelming success).
  • Coordinate a ground game for the get-out-the-vote effort to include door-to-door canvassing and phone banking.
  • Centralize and manage the operation of these efforts and other party-building activities.

Celebrate our history AND Be part of the future!  You can keep our history and the successes of 2008 alive!

On behalf of all Democrats in Mecklenburg County, let me thank for your efforts in the past as well for the help we will get from you this year. We will succeed thanks to your contributions of time and money.

Mayor Pro Tem Susan Burgess asks that you consider participating in this program for our neighbors in need.  Her article reprinted from the Charlotte Observer, July 17, 2009.

Share the Warmth: An easy way to make change

Wednesday morning when I told my husband Pat that I was off to read a city proclamation for Share the Warmth, he wanted to know more. I explained about the opportunity created by Piedmont Natural Gas to help our neighbors in need to pay their energy bills through Crisis Assistance Ministry. It's so simple: just round up your monthly gas bill to the nearest dollar, and the balance goes into a special fund for energy assistance. He immediately said, “Sign us up!” That was exactly my reaction, and I believe it will be yours too.

Joining me Wednesday were Carol Hardison, executive director, Crisis Assistance Ministry; Tom Skains, Piedmont Natural Gas chairman, president and chief executive officer; and Valerie Kight, a woman helped by Crisis Assistance Ministry who shared her moving story. Tom announced a contribution of $100,000 to Share the Warmth and issued a challenge – if 100,000 Piedmont customers sign up for Share the Warmth in the next 60 days, Piedmont will donate an additional $50,000 to Share the Warmth.

I know we all will rise to the challenge.

The need in our community has never been greater. More than 10,000 families in Charlotte are expected to need energy assistance this year, and if just half of Piedmont's customers sign up for Share the Warmth, we could help thousands of families. Share the Warmth funds can be used to pay energy bills throughout the year regardless of the energy source used in the home – including natural gas, propane, oil, electricity, coal, kerosene and wood.

Contributions are tax deductible and 100 percent of every donation goes to assisting families and individuals in need. If you're a Piedmont customer, please sign up today at www.piedmontng.com. Non-Piedmont customers may also contribute by going to that site.

It couldn't be simpler to help our neighbors in need – and the most it could cost any of us is $12 a year. That's small change to change lives. So join my family, Charlotte, and “Sign us up.”

Marty, At this point I believe everyone is aware of your party affiliation and the candidates that you would like the neighborhood to support.  As previously stated, it would seem more appropriate to put all of these political posts in the "Local Government" section of Neighborhood Link.  This does not seem to be the forum for all Democratic Party email forwards to be posted.

gnpalmer

Thanks for your post and your suggestion.

A.  local government area is a fixed area of the site.  Neighborhood coordinators control only which government officials show up on their site. They don't control other content in that area of the web site.

B. these post are not just on our neighborhood site in Madison Park.  The info is posted for the benefit of others that might like to read the news or info.  When you post you choose which areas see it.  From just your neighborhood to the entire US.

C. I have titled these particular topics to what they are so if it does not interest you then I suggest you simply avoid opening them.

D. the two pubic areas of these sites open to all registered users are the calendar and the discussion pages.

E. Madison Park Neighborhood Welcomes all candidates at our monthly meetings and events.   You will find if you were not present that Andy Dulin Republican, Georgia Belk Republican, and Jane Childrey Democrat all stopped in and were allowed to speak this month.  By the way I didn't know any of these were appearing and was not even present myself that night.  I read it in our minutes.

This particular news posted contains candidates all over the city.  Be it Democrats since it is Meck. Dem News.

Feel free to post candidate news or any other news you wish on the site anytime as long as you follow this rules which I included below.  These are not my rules but the rules of neighborhoodlink.

I have posted on this site for many years and have 410 post on this site verses your 2 post complaining about what, and where I post news on candidates.  Glad you have decided to join in.

The posting about all candidates running is non party.  It includes everyone that filed by the deadline last week and their affliation.  It does not say Vote for any one person or group of persons.  It simply providers the reader with a list of all candidates.

As far as which candidates I endorse ...I have always stated I support those current officials and those candidates that I feel will best serve the interest of our community.  In the past that has been a mix of Democrats and Republicans.  So don't make assumptions about which candidates I support because unless your standing in the voting booth with me You Don't Know!   I have had a unique opportunity to get to know many of the elected officials when I served at the President of Madison Park HOA for 4 years.  I can tell you some of the officials are always willing to help out with community problems.  Others I have found will contact your or start trying to be helpful only at election time.  Those folks will not get my support, endorsement or even my ear.

I post many items from all kinds of sources.   Some are from  City Departments that request I share with others, news of interest, and political news that I wish to share.

I do not use our e-mail list to send this type info out and it is posted in a public area of our webs site.  Matter of fact I don't have our e-mail distribution list and it is maintained by one person. .
