- Legislators Plan Devastating Cuts to N.C. Courtrooms
"It's unbelievable," said newly elected District Attorney Andrew Murray. "It will be devastating to our community. We can't sustain those kinds of losses without it having a significant impact." WCNC 3/29/11

NC Legislators Plan Devastating Cuts to Courtroom Funding: In a proposal released last week, NC state legislators plan on drastically cutting or eliminating drug treatment and family courts, despite evidence that shows these courts save taxpayers money in the long run, by more efficient courtroom use, and lower recidivism rates when offenders are directed towards services that focus on rehabilitation.
The cost of running a drug-related offender through traditional court system is more than double the cost of trying an offender in drug court. In a WCNC Report, Todd Nucio (head of the Admin. Office of the Courts) reported that tax payers will end up paying much more to send drug offenders to jail, than to try to rehabilitate them through drug courts.
NSC believes that the improvements to the Criminal Justice System realized in the past few years will all but be reversed by these measures.

Charlotte City Council to Eliminate Funding for CMS Crossing Guards, and School Campus Security
In a move that will do away all CMS crossing guards and about 50 police officers assigned to schools, the City Council plans to eliminate these expenses to save roughly $2mm annually. Teachers will have to fill the role of enforcing campus safety - a role no teacher should have to play! One area high school will end up with one armed police officer serving a school of 2900 students. How many towns that size only have one police officer? PLEASE contact City Council members and ask them to reverse this decision: Mayor Anthony FoxxMayor Pro Tem: Patrick CannonCouncil At Large: Jason BurgessCouncil At Large: David HowardCouncil At Large: Edwin Peacock- Patsy Kinsey, District 1 - James Mitchell, Jr., District 2 - Warren Turner, District 3 - Michael Barnes, District 4 - Nancy G.
