The City of Charlotte is warning the public to prepare for ??‹a winter storm beginning Monday afternoon into Tuesday. The storm is predicted to bring icing conditions that may make road and travel conditions dangerous in the area. Ice could accumulate on power lines and trees resulting in power outages and downed trees.

Roads - Major roads, bridges and hospital entrances are being treated. Crews will continue treating roads throughout the evening and into tomorrow morning. Residents should stay off roads. Motorists should stay back from heavy equipment treating roads and watch for black ice. Pedestrians should use extreme caution on sidewalks. Residents are asked to salt sidewalks adjacent to their property. Call 311 to report icy roads.??‹

Trash and recycling - Yard waste is suspended today in order to focus on trash and recycling. Residents who receive Tuesday collectin service should place their carts at the curb no later than 6 a.m. Tuesday. Collection services for tomorrow will be reviewed and announced Tuesday morning.

Buses and light rail - Express bus service began at 3:30 p.m. and will continue for as long as possible. Airport - De-icing procedures are under way and taxiways are being treated. Please contact your airline directly??‹ for schedule changes. The airport is prepared to initiate its irregular operations plan, if needed, to assist stranded passengers who may remain in the terminal overnight. This includes extended concessions and checkpoint hours, aviation department support staff and emergency supplies.

Police - CMPD has increased its staffing capacity to respond as needed.

Fire - CFD has brought in additional staff to assist in possible increases in calls, response to wrecks and downed power lines.

Water - Citizens should call 311 to report any water main leaks in the street or on sidewalks. Residents are asked to take measures to protect their plumbing. View tips here.

Warming stations - A warming station will open from noon to 6 p.m. It is located at the Mecklenburg County Homeless Resource Center, 618 North College Street (map). Those requiring shelter will be provided transportation.
