Martin,

It has been a long year with the worst anti-LGBTQ law, HB2, on the books. The law has cost the state millions of dollars, has tarnished its reputation and has put its people at risk for discrimination every single day. We have all worked tirelessly to repeal this law so that we can begin repairing the damage it has caused. It was clear that HB2 was a mistake and should have never been passed. It was also clear that we needed a full repeal to move forward.

Unfortunately, today, lawmakers in Raleigh passed HB142, a bill that was sold as a repeal by Governor Cooper, Phil Berger and Tim Moore. Just a few hours ago, Governor Cooper signed that bill into law.

We are deeply disappointed and opposed to HB142. Similar to HB2, LGBTQ stakeholders were not included in the discussions that led to this bad compromise. We cannot talk about protecting the LGBTQ community with no LGBTQ people at the table.

HB2 was a direct attack on the transgender community. HB142 only continues this discrimination by barring cities from passing non-discrimination protections until 2020 and making it illegal for cities to pass transgender protections.

HB142 is not a solution - it's a continuation of HB2.

We will never compromise on the rights and protections of LGBTQ people and we will continue fighting this bill, just like we fought HB2.
