Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement, Development Community Prepare for 2018 N.C. Codes Change
North Carolina is in the process of changing to a new set of building codes for the first time in six years. These codes govern the standards by which buildings are constructed or renovated in the state and are part of the backbone of a safe and thriving community.
While the changes in the 2018 code are mostly a matter of formatting or minor revisions, the development community does need to prepare for them, as time is running out to submit plans and obtain permits under the current code. To aid our customers in this transition, Code Enforcement has built a “Code Change Central” webpage, which can be accessed by clicking the code change logo on Code Enforcement’s website at meckpermit.com. This page will be regularly updated with detailed guidance.
As with any code change, there is the potential for increased turnaround time for services as staff and customers adjust to the change. We anticipate increasing workloads as customers work to get their plans submitted and approved before the current codes sunset. However, staff are placing a strong emphasis on minimizing these types of delays.
The 2018 codes can be used now, if the customer desires, but become mandatory for all projects permitted after Dec. 31. Staff have recommended target dates for plans submittals and permit application submittals to allow customers to reach that goal.
