Public Health to Hold Back-to-School Immunization Clinics in September

It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over, and the school year is about to begin.

To help parents and kids prepare for school, the Mecklenburg County Public Health Department will be hosting immunization clinics in September.

As you know, children must have specific immunizations and a health assessment in order to attend North Carolina public schools. This year, we will be offering the required immunizations, while the health assessments will be offered off-site during the immunization clinics.

Parents are reminded to bring their child’s official shot records and at least one form of identification.

Clinics and assessments will be offered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dates and locations are listed below:

  • Saturday, Sept. 8 – Northwest Public Health Department, 2845 Beatties Ford Road (immunizations); West Charlotte High School (health assessments)
  • Saturday, Sept. 15 - Southeast Public Health Department, 249 Billingsley Road, Billingsville Elementary School (immunizations); Billingsville Elementary School (health assessments)

As a reminder, parents can always make an appointment for vaccinations by calling the Public Health appointment line at 704-336-6500 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

New Report on State of Housing & Homelessness in Charlotte-Mecklenburg to be Released

This Thursday, Community Support Services (CSS) will release a new report with UNC Charlotte Urban Institute called the 2018 State of Housing & Homelessness in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.

This report marks the first time that housing and homelessness data have been reported together, folding the data from the 2018 Point-in-Time Count into the larger context of homelessness system performance measures and housing instability metrics. The objective is to provide a full picture of the challenges and solutions along the continuum from housing instability, homelessness and housing stability.

The report will be available on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing & Homelessness Dashboard site.

For more information, contact CSS Director Stacy Lowry at 980-314-8903 or Stacy.Lowry@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov.

Second Ward Gym Dedication Ceremony Set for Aug. 31

Next Friday, Aug. 31, we will officially celebrate the reopening of Second Ward Gym, one of Mecklenburg’s prized historical landmarks, with festivities beginning at 10 a.m. The gym is located at 710 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Commissioners and the public are invited to attend this wonderful occasion, which will feature tours of the renovated facility, brief remarks from dignitaries, light refreshments and more.

Second Ward High School Gymnasium is one of the last remaining structures of Charlotte’s first public high school for African American students, which opened in 1923 within the Brooklyn neighborhood. The gym originally opened in 1949.
