Weekly Campaign Newsletter
On the 2018 general election ballot, City of Charlotte voters have the opportunity to approve a $223 million bond referenda package that will fund construction and revitalization of transportation corridors including streets and sidewalks, affordable housing, and improvements to neighborhoods in established and emerging high-growth areas.

Voters will find the bonds at the end of the ballot in the referenda section following the six constitutional amendments.
Project Spotlight: I-85 North Bridge

In 2014 and 2016, Charlotte voters approved funding to build the first of two bridges in the University City area. The I-85 south bridge, now called the University Pointe bridge, was completed in 2017 and extends from IKEA Boulevard to IBM Drive. The bridge provides connectivity, access to the CATS Blue Line Extension station at McCullough Drive and redistributes traffic away from City Boulevard and Harris Boulevard.

The proposed I-85 north bridge is a key transportation project to be funded by the bonds on the November 6th ballot. The bridge will link Research Drive to J.W. Clay Boulevard, providing connectivity to transit, residential, retail and educational uses in University City to the employment center of the University Research Park. Additionally, it will provide an alternative route to WT Harris Boulevard and Mallard Creek Church Road interchanges and accommodate all modes of transportation -- motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians and transit.

University Pointe Bridge (I-85 south bridge) was made possible by bonds funding approved in 2014 and 2016.
Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the timeframe for constructing the projects and issuing the bonds to pay for them?

A: Bonds are issued as projects are being constructed in order to minimize the financing costs during the construction period. Some projects are public-private collaborations (such as development of certain housing communities), meaning the timing will largely depend upon the specific project.
