Coronavirus Tips, From an Infectious Disease Specialist

Coronavirus Tips, From an Infectious Disease Specialist

The internet can be a great place for information about coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). But it can also be a place of misinformation and anxiety. As we work hard to keep you healthy and informed, we talked to one of our infectious disease specialists, Dr. Lewis McCurdy, who has a few things you can keep in mind.

Practice social distancing.

Coronavirus can spread from person to person—that's why it’s so important to work together as a community to protect each other. Whether you’re sick or feeling great, staying home is the best idea right now. If you must go out, avoid groups of more than 10, and stay 6 feet away from others.

Stay calm if you have symptoms.

According to Dr. McCurdy, most patients with coronavirus have mild to moderate symptoms. The most common symptoms are fever, cough and shortness of breath, but they can be different for everyone.
If you think you’re sick, monitor your symptoms and let your healthcare provider know. Be extra sure to wash your hands, cough into your arm, and self-quarantine by staying home and away from others for 14 days.

You might not need to get tested.

We know this has been confusing, but not everyone needs to be tested right now—especially if your symptoms are mild or you’re feeling well overall. Our healthcare professionals can help determine the best way for you to get care and if testing is right for you.

Get assessed and cared for from home.

You don’t need to go to your doctor’s office, emergency room or urgent care, unless you’re having difficulty breathing. For more mild symptoms, you can get medical care from the comfort of home.
In addition to remote care options, we’re offering free online risk assessments for COVID-19 that can help you identify the best next steps for care.
If you have a life-threatening emergency, call 911.
