Shirley W. Greene
April 5, 1930 - April 29, 2021
Charlotte, North Carolina - Shirley W. Greene passed away on April 29, 2021 at Atrium Hospice of Union County, NC. She was 91. In the final weeks of her life, she was lovingly surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Kenneth "Red" Greene. Survivors include three children, Vicky Lee (Peter) Jorgenson, Rebecca (Charles) Fennewald, and Paul Smith (Sherri) Greene; three grandchildren, Gudrun Ellsworth, William "Will" Greene, and Rachel Greene; and one great-grandchild, Clara Ellsworth.
Shirley was born April 5, 1930, in Savannah and spent her childhood years there. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy in Belmont and remained dedicated to her Catholic faith throughout her life. After her schooling, she moved to Charlotte where she met Red Greene. They were married on St. Patrick's Day of 1950 in St. Patrick's Church, Charlotte.
Shirley and Red spent the first years of their marriage in Chapel Hill while he was attending UNC. She worked at the snack shop called The Skuttlebutt in the middle of the UNC campus. After Red graduated from Carolina, the couple returned to Charlotte where they raised a family and made lifelong friends.
Shirley was a working mom as her children grew up, with jobs at Addressograph, Charles Chips, and Leibowitz Research. She also found time to be an avid tennis player and follow her beloved Carolina Tar Heels.
Her always bright, fun, and outgoing personality meant that Shirley had many wonderful friends. There were friends from the early days along a then quiet Park Road, where young families made memories together, as well as friends from church, from tennis, and from the senior citizens center. Even the daughters of Shirley's friends became her cherished friends. Paul Jorgenson, Vicky and Peter's nephew, also shared a special bond with Shirley.
For their wonderful care of Shirley, the family would like to thank:
Jamie Gardner, Clarissa Dunbar, Shonta Broughton and the Hospice staff.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 PM on May 28, 2021, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Parish in Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Shirley's honor to Atrium Hospice of Union County.
Shirley will be truly missed by her family and friends. Rest in peace.
