Eviction Moratorium: Updates and Resources

On August 3, the CDC reinstated the eviction moratorium for areas with “high” and “substantial” community transmission of COVID-19. This includes Mecklenburg County. Although this new order temporarily halts evictions in these hotspots, on August 23, Mecklenburg County Courts plan to resume hearings for the backlog of some eviction cases. See below for a list of City resources and additional local resources available to those who need rental, mortgage, and/or utility assistance.

RAMP CLT

Households at risk of eviction and that otherwise need help with rent, mortgage or utilities due to a COVID-19 hardship are encouraged to apply for assistance through the City’s emergency housing assistance program, RAMP CLT, by visiting rampclt.com.

  • All RAMP CLT applicants who have an eviction court date scheduled within 90 days of their application are placed in the Priority 1 category, which is the highest priority.
  • DreamKey Partners has increased staff in order to accommodate the increased volume of application activity. RAMP CLT representatives will also be at the courthouse to assist those facing eviction when hearings resume.
  • To assist as many households as possible, the maximum amount of assistance available will cover any arrears and up to three months’ rent forward.

Community Relations Dispute Settlement Program

The City’s Dispute Settlement Program (DSP) offers free mediation services with a trained, neutral third party (mediators) who work with landlords and tenants to reach an agreement. This provides an opportunity to express concerns, interests and needs in a confidential setting, and provides an avenue for paying restitution for damages, losses or rent, with the goal of helping tenants avoid eviction.

  • When eviction hearings resume, DSP staff and volunteer mediators will attend court in-person to provide mediation and conciliation services.

Additional Community Resources

  • Additional assistance information is available on rampclt.com, including mediation and legal services, non-COVID related rent and utility assistance, food and nutrition, childcare assistance, public health WIC, child support, and general health and human services information.
  • Crisis Assistance Ministry is using their housing navigators to help connect at-risk households to available community rental assistance.

Charlotte Needs Your Input on its New Citywide Transportation Plan

The City of Charlotte is preparing a Strategic Mobility Plan to support and implement the “safe and equitable” mobility goal from the recently adopted 2040 Comprehensive Plan. The Charlotte Strategic Mobility Plan team is hosting a series of Neighborhood Listening Sessions to collect public input on the development of the plan. The Neighborhood Listening Sessions will begin on August 16th. All listening sessions will be virtual and are intended to collect early public input for the Strategic Mobility Plan process.

Visit the Charlotte Strategic Mobility Plan for more details and information. We’re looking forward to learning more from you about your vision for the future of transportation in Charlotte!.

Free Recycling Educational Presentations for Residents

Wishful recycling (placing items in recycling that is actually garbage) costs Mecklenburg County over $1.9M per year. Those costs arise from the special processing cost that the County pays to separate the unacceptable materials out of the recycling stream and then the cost to transport and dump the ill-placed objects (trash) into the landfill. Unfortunately, wishful recycling is growing each year and more contaminates are entering our local recycling stream. Every household in Mecklenburg county is encouraged to be familiar with this Recycling Mini Guide to ensure only the correct items are placed in curbside recycling bins.

In addition, Mecklenburg County Solid Waste Program is offering FREE recycling educational presentations. The interactive virtual presentations are typically 45-60 minutes in length. There is always ample time for discussion and questions at the end. Please register for an upcoming presentation and share these registration links with your networks widely:
