Old Smith Family Center Tyvola Hazard Evaluation?

Building where CMS employees diagnosed with cancer worked will be evaluated – WSOC TV

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education has opened a Health Hazard Evaluation with the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health to explore whether there is an occupational cancer cluster at Smith Family Center.

According to the board, although the Smith Family Center was set to be sold and torn down, it will not be demolished until officials have completed any and all tests recommended by NIOSH.

From an early story in Sept.

There’s no one working inside the building now. Channel 9 discovered CMS moved more than 100 employees out of there in April after many voiced serious concerns about their health and fears the building could be the cause of their problems.

This story is interesting I think especially if you live along the school property boundary on Londonderry.   Is there dangerous radon coming up out of ground?  It will be interesting to see of the National Institue for Occupational Safety & Health finds an apparent cause for the illnesses of the former staff.

My other thought is why are they selling the CMS property for anyway?   The article states it was set to be sold and torn down?   When Smith Langauge uped and moved years ago it sat empty for a few years and was scheduled to be torn down.  Then they decided to use it for the Smith Family Center.    What would go there?   CMS and the new Language Academy built back behind the old Smith Family Center sits on the old school property that use to front Tyvola.   There is still a driveway off Tyvola moved up across from Baker Drive to the new school.     A second entrance is off Flagstaff.   Before CMS goes selling off that property they should considering putting in a nice long driveway or marked parking drive for the afternoon pickups.   Get that line up on Londonderry in the evenings off our street and all that extra traffic.   (school has done a pretty good job of shortening the backups between 4PM and 4:30PM on Londonderry.  However it still jams up bumper to bumper every school day betwen Kentland and Chedworth).
