Dear Friends,

I hope my message finds you and your family healthy and well.

This month we celebrate the history and heritage of our nation’s first inhabitants. North Carolina is home to eight state recognized tribes including the Coharie, Eastern Band of Cherokee, Haliwa-Saponi, Lumbee, Meherrin, Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, Sappony and Waccamaw-Siouan. We are grateful for the rich history and traditions of our tribes and their many contributions that make our state a better place for all.

Please share our newsletter so your friends and family can stay up to date with the latest news, information, and resources relevant to the Cooper Administration.

Governor Cooper Proclaims Employ A Veteran Week

Job fairs and other events scheduled

North Carolina will celebrate "Employ A Veteran Week," Nov. 8-12, with a variety of events to help connect veterans to jobs and other services, Governor Roy Cooper announced today.

“In North Carolina, we appreciate our military, our veterans, and their families, who have all served and sacrificed for our country,” Governor Cooper said. “One great way that our employers can honor veterans is by hiring them, and as an added benefit they will also be getting some of the best employees they have ever had.”

Governor Cooper Urges Families to Take Action and Apply for Child Tax Credit Payments

Eligible families must sign up by November 15 deadline

Today Governor Roy Cooper encouraged families across North Carolina to apply for child tax credit payments. These dollars can immediately improve the food and financial security of families with children at a critical time as they work to recover from the pandemic. Families can visit GetCTC.org to find out if they are eligible for the payments and sign up to get them. The tool is mobile friendly and can be completed within about 15 minutes in most cases.

“It is important for eligible North Carolina families to apply for this credit before the rapidly approaching deadline,” said Governor Cooper. “These funds will help families recover from the pandemic and care for their children at a time when it is needed most.”

NC Office of Recovery and Resilience Commits to Funding More Then 1,000 New Affordable Housing Units

Units will be located in hurricane-impacted regions.

The N.C. Office of Recovery and Resiliency (NCORR) has committed funding to more than 1,000 new affordable housing units in regions of North Carolina hard-hit by Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Florence. Approximately $53.5 million of the state’s HUD Community Development Block Grant–Disaster Recovery funds are being used in partnership with the N.C. Housing Finance Agency, public housing authorities in the cities of Lumberton and Wilson, and Cumberland County government to increase safe, affordable housing opportunities for low-to-moderate income households.

“Safe, affordable housing is key to long-term recovery and resiliency in areas impacted by Matthew, Florence and other natural disasters,” said Governor Roy Cooper. “This funding commitment underscores our efforts to rebuild smarter and stronger for North Carolina families.”

Construction of the new housing is expected to be completed before 2026 with the units to be offered as rentals for eligible households.

#SomosNC Statewide Listening Tour

LatinxEd is an educational initiative founded by Elaine Townsend-Utin and State Rep. Ricky Hurtado that provides support to Latinx students and immigrant families striving for higher education. Education is a huge barrier when it comes to success in the BIPOC/Latinx communities.

LatinxEd is launching the #SomosNC Statewide Listening Tour, which will be going across the state to hear from communities about the barriers to opportunity that Latinx families face and go largely undiscussed at decision-making tables. The first stop will be in the North Central region of NC from October 19 through October 21, with a virtual town hall on November 15.

State Agencies Now accepting Applications for Summer 2022 Student Internships

“This internship program is an excellent steppingstone for college students interested in a public service career,” said Administration Secretary Pamela B. Cashwell. “For more than 50 years, the program has been instrumental in bridging lessons learned in the classroom to hands on professional work experience.”
