Recycle the Runway! Student Upcycled Fashion Competition is Saturday

Mecklenburg County, NC –This Saturday, high school students will compete by creatively upcycling “recycling” into wearable fashions. The public fashion show will be held Saturday, April 30 at 1 p.m. at Northlake Mall, 6801 Northlake Mall Drive, Charlotte.

Mecklenburg County’s Solid Waste program is the primary sponsor to the County’s Keep America Beautiful Chapter. Each Spring, Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful hosts an upcycled fashion show, Recycle the Runway, to recognize and reward local student artists. Both public and private high schoolers are given the opportunity to design, create, and model an Avant Garde outfit crafted from recyclable materials. Over the past six years, the event has returned over $140,000 in prize money directly to local schools.

The general public is encouraged to attend the competitive showcase on Saturday. Local businesses sponsored awards for the winning schools, and in 2022 there are over $20,000 in prizes to award.

“We hope to increase public awareness and inspire the community to think about the creative possibilities of repurposing “trash” into something new, instead of throwing it away,” says Mecklenburg County Solid Waste Director Jeff Smithberger.

Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful Chair, David Valder adds, “Due to the pandemic, some students were forced to wait two years to share their unique creations with the community. We are thrilled to see what they come up with this year!”
