CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A south Charlotte school had to be evacuated on Friday after it received a bomb threat, the school said in a letter to parents.

Pinewood Elementary School received the threat on Friday afternoon, and out of an abundance of caution, cleared out the school and moved all students and staff to a nearby Office Depot store on South Boulevard.

School officials are working closely with law enforcement to provide their complete support and help in any way possible.

Parents can pick up car riders from the Office Depot location. Bus riders will also be picked up at the store.

CMS sent the following message to families about the incident:

“Hello Pinewood Elementary families. This is Principal Pegram with an important message. This afternoon our school received a bomb threat. Out of an abundance of caution, all students and staff have been evacuated to Office Depot located at 5107 South Blvd. School officials are working closely with law enforcement to provide complete support and help in any way possible.

“Parents and families of car riders will need to pick up their children from the Office Depot, and bus riders will be dismissed from the same location.

“Law enforcement will continue its investigation of the campus and buildings. The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority.

“All threats and school disruptions are in violation of the CMS Code of Student Conduct and those involved will be disciplined accordingly. Where warranted, law enforcement pursues legal action as well.

“Thank you for your continued support of Pinewood Elementary.”

Police warned of heavy traffic in the area, asking drivers to avoid it if possible.

Wonder why they didn't just take the children up to Baker Drive and then directly over to the Old Smith Gym, or the new school gym crossing Tyvola.  It would of been more comfortable for the kids without jackets to be sitting in the gym instead of on the payment on the side of the strip center.   Probably a little shorter walk.   Police could of blocked off Tyvola long enough to get them across safely.

They could of gone up Seacroft and crossed Tyvola,  but that would of not gotten them off Tyvola as quickly.

I saw one parent a little upset on the news they got sent out without jackets etc.  I understand the urgent need to get them out, but to then leave them out not so much.
