This week, NCDHHS announced it will launch the Children and Families Specialty Plan, a first-of-its-kind statewide health plan to ensure access to comprehensive physical and behavioral health services for Medicaid-enrolled children, youth and families served by the child welfare system.
NCDHHS released an updated policy paper about the plan and is preparing to launch it later this year. NCDHHS is leveraging the historic investment from the NC General Assembly to ensure everyone receives the care they need when and where they need it. The Children and Families Specialty Plan is a key initiative in improving youth behavioral health in North Carolina.
The plan will cover an array of Medicaid-covered physical and behavioral health benefits regardless of the geographic location or situation the beneficiary is experiencing. It includes a broad range of behavioral health services and will be responsible for addressing unmet health-related resource needs, including housing, food, transportation and interpersonal violence. Read more about the plan in a news release. |

Last week, Yazmin Garcia Rico, NCDHHS' Director of Latinx and Hispanic Policy and Strategy, received the prestigious John R. Larkins Award.
Established in 1988, the award recognizes commitment to justice and equality in the workplace and in the community and was announced during the state’s annual North Carolina State Employee’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Observance Program.
Yazmin was chosen for the high honor because she exemplifies the core values of the Larkins Award. For more than a decade, she’s been a tireless advocate for the Latinx community's health and well-being, coupled with her efforts to expand educational access for marginalized populations.
Through her pivotal roles in health care at Alamance Regional Medical Center, and subsequently at NCDHHS, Yazmin's leadership redefined community engagement during the pandemic. Her innovative strategies, including live Cafecitos and tele-town halls, provided critical information to more than 64,000 residents and marginalized communities. |
