Volunteers Spotlight

Volunteers cleaning a creek.

We’d like to highlight Tri Pointe Homes from our Adopt-A-Stream program as the volunteer group of the month!  Tri Pointe Homes is a dedicated team that has adopted four segments of Irvins Creek totaling over 3 miles of stream that they work hard to clean several times a year! Adopt-A-Stream can be a tough job so we want to thank this team for keeping their commitment to keeping that many miles of stream clean. You all are awesome!

“The Tri Pointe Homes team was proud to have the opportunity to play an active role in keeping our community clean together with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Stormwater Services,” said Gray Shell, Charlotte Division President for Tri Pointe Homes. “The Adopt-A-Stream program is an important initiative for us as it allows our team to make a difference in preserving the unique beauty and healthy waterways that we enjoy in the Charlotte area. We were also excited to be able to help near our Alton Creek community in Mint Hill, which we hope will enhance the area for our homeowners. It was especially rewarding and eye-opening to do it as a team, and we look forward to aiding this effort for years to come.”

Volunteers cleaning a creek.

Community service is often an important part of clubs such as National Honors Society, Beta Club, and IB programs! Volunteering with us is a great way to make an impact in your community while also fulfilling some of these volunteer hours needed to participate is these great organizations! There are many ways to volunteer with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services. We host at least two volunteer events each month or you can participate in our other programs such as Adopt-A-Stream, Volunteer Monitoring, Storm Drain Marking, Adopt-A-Drain, and Tree Maintenance! Check out our volunteer page to learn about how you or your team can get involved or email STW-Volunteers@MeckNC.gov.

Adopt-A-Stream: A Stream Site in Need!

Creek with Trash

Every now and then we find a stream very much in need of some TLC. Unfortunately, Stewart Creek at Coronet way and Norwood Dr. was reported to have a lot of trash! If you are looking for a challenge and would like to take on this stream site for a cleanup, please email STW-Volunteers@MeckNC.gov. If you are already an Adopt-A-Stream volunteer, this site can count towards your two clean-ups a year!

  Scoop the Poop!

I Poop. You Scoop. Easy Peazy.

Bacteria and other components of pet waste can throw off the natural balance of our streams and harm aquatic life. Be sure to always pick up after your pets whether it’s in our parks, on the streets, or in your back yard! Scoop the poop! Bag it and trash it!

  Safe Swimming

Know Before You Go. Two men fishing.

Many of us are out enjoying our lakes around the county and it’s important to know that the waters are safe for contact. Orange water could indicate excess sediment, gray water could indicate sewage contamination, and green water could indicate a harmful algal bloom. If you come across any discolored water, please report it to 311. Always remember to wait 72 hours after a rain event to engage in water recreation in our coves. If you would like to be notified of any swim advisories in our area, text MECKNOSWIM to 888-777 to get them sent straight to your phone. We will also be posting updates all summer long on our social media pages (@StormWaterCM).
