Are the aesthetics the sole yardstick by which we should judge a neighbor's property? Most, of course, would say no. The content of the character, to paraphrase a famous American, is the standard in which most would find the truer, more meaningful value. Merced Housing, our Elmhurst street neighbor on the Broadway side of Lamar elementary, can easily demonstrate the qualities of good neighborliness by both measures.
As they celebrate their 10th year of success, non-profit Merced Housing brings to Mahncke Park a quiet dignity, reflected in its mission:...to create and strengthen healthy communities through the provision of quality, affordable, service-enriched housing for individuals and families who are economically poor.
The Elmhurst Place Apartments, 130 Elmhurst, according to long-time neighbors, was an eyesore. When Merced designed it to accomodate individuals who are challenged physically and mentally, they took the consideration of the neighborhood to heart. It is now a well-maintained and well-managed property; a pleasant, meaningful, and enriching addition to our area.
