DECEMBER 2003

Nov 30, 2003

Own a Home in MM ?– But NOT a Computer?

Well, it is Christmas and THIS is your opportunity for a FREE computer. No gimmicks ?– it IS free. If the adults in your home are not interested ?– the school kids probably are.

Paul Simpson actually took a few days off to have 2 (possibly more) ready in time for Christmas Presents.

Three criteria that must be met are:
?· You must be a MM homeowner
?· You do not already have a computer
?· You are willing to get internet access, including e-mail (from $10-25 a month) depending on your chosen provider.

Drop off your name, address and phone number at Kristine and Tim Malcolm?’s home at 912 W. Pampa by December 19.

There will be a drawing Luminaries Night, Sunday, Dec. 21st, on Spruce and Posada with Paul Simpson drawing the lucky winners ?– AND ?– you do not have to be present to win. Please don?’t refrain from turning your name in ?– it is never published and YOU have a great chance of winning.

Plata Avenue?’s GAIN Block Party

By Denise Jones

Congratulations to Carol Strongoli, winner of two Harkins Theatre movie tickets. Carol's name was drawn from over 25 entries at Plata Avenue's Neighborhood Blockwatch event. Held on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, neighbors from the 8-900 blocks gathered for food, fun, and festivities.

Thanks to all who attended and contributed to the success of the event. A special thank you to Albertson's, Basha's, and Fry's Supermarkets for their donations of food and party supplies.

Annual Toy Drive and Party

By Sandra Fischer

Don't forget the time to party hearty in the neighborhood is almost here. For us, this means our Annual Toy Drive to benefit the East Valley Child Crisis Center.

Come join your neighbors for some food, fun, and good conversation while helping kids have a merrier Christmas. Our annual Toy Drive and Christmas Party is set for

Saturday, December 13, 2003
11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The park at Wycliff and Peralta

With only two weeks until the party, we still need lots of help. What we need from you is the following: soda, chips, bottled water, candy canes, tablecloths, holiday decorations, and one large cooler. We also need volunteers to run games, help clean the park before and after the party, and a truck with someone to drive the gifts to the East Valley Child Crisis Center (EVCCC).

If you can donate any of the above items or help us on the day of the party, please contact any of our committee members. We will be happy to pick up and store any items you wish to provide. Just call or email any of us as follows:

Sandra Fischer: 820-2773 or
uffdaskf@cableaz.com
Ellen Bretzke: 755-8618 or
ellenbretzke@hotmail.com
Sandy Scully: 345-9823 or
runscully@msn.com
Velda Burton: 345-9978 or
velda@cableaz.com

Of course Santa will be there to do his part with the kids, so make sure your little ones have their lists ready. Photos will be $1 per child. Santa's helpers will be taking the toy donations for the EVCCC.

Remember, for safety reasons, we need new unwrapped toys for the kids who live at the center. Even if you have no children at home, you can help by providing one toy and bringing it to the party. Then, stay for conversation and good food . We hope everyone will want to join us during this time of giving and enjoyment.

There will be plenty of food, as we have ordered 4 subs and lots of cake. We will have games for all to enjoy, such as a water balloon and egg carry relay. Should the big kids want to join in the fun, they can play a game of kickball or help show the younger ones how to play.

Each year we hope to increase our attendance and amount of toys collected. For that, we need you. Please come to make Marlborough Mesa the neighborhood that shares with care. I'll be looking forward to seeing each and every one of you!!

Spruce Street?’s 5th Annual

By Linda Murphy

On Sunday, December 21st , Spruce Street will have their annual Luminaries Event. Join the tradition or start a new one on your street, as residents on Spruce prepare for their 5th Annual ?“Lighting of the Luminaries?”. All it takes are a few plain brown bags, sand and votive candles. It is lots of fun and can fulfill one Blockwatch requirement for your street.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

By Velda Burton

The Tempe Fire Department is offering Community Emergency Response (CERT) Team Training. CERT Training promotes a partnering effort between emergency services and the people that they serve. The goal is for emergency personnel to train members of neighborhoods, community organizations, or workplaces in basic response skills. CERT members are then integrated into the emergency response capability for their area. If a disastrous event overwhelms or delays the community?’s professional response, CERT members can assist others by applying the basic response and organizational skills that they learned during training.

Sessions require about 20 hours to complete and are designed to cover the following areas:

?· Disaster Preparedness
?· Fire Safety
?· Disaster Medical Operations (several areas)
?· Light Search and Rescue
?· Team organization
?· Disaster Psychology
?· Terrorism

For more information, check their website at www.tempe.gov/fire or to sign up for training call 480-858-7230 and leave your name and phone number.

Vice Mayor Dennis Kavanaugh Campaign

Many of you have signed the petitions in the neighborhood to have Vice Mayor Kavanaugh put on the ballot once again. It will be voting time come spring of next year. Please remember that he has staunchly supported us as a neighborhood ?– and it is time now, for us to help him. While it may be too late to sign the petition for him to be put on the ballot, it will not be too late to VOTE for him when that time arrives. Also, you can volunteer to help in any number of ways?…by addressing cards/letters, telephoning, displaying yard signs, etc.

All campaigns are a costly. Whether you can send $5 or $100, it will be greatly appreciated. This will allow him once again to help us as a neighborhood go forward in 2004, as he has helped us since 1999. Send any donations to:

Chalk Recall

By Cindy Hedger

Many notices come across my desk each day -- young mothers may want to check this one out: ?“Aggio Corp., Hong Kong and Target Corp., are voluntarily recalling about 26,000 packages of Multicolored Sidewalk Chalk. The chalk contains high levels of lead, posing a risk of poisoning to your children. The sidewalk chalk was sold at Target stores from March 2003 to July 2003.?”

Neighborhood Notes

Carol Behrend will be one of the new Ambassadors (or back up) for the 1000-1100 blocks of Pecos. Carol is semi-retired from EVIT. She once thought of selling her home here and moving into an adult community. She said they are touted as friendly and caring communities. But, she feels the ?“friendly and caring?” community is right here in MM!

New DQ Coming

We will soon have a new Dairy Queen being build this spring across the street from our main entrance at Pecos and Alma School. No dates have been set yet for the actual building to begin but the next PUBLIC MEETING is to be December 18th at 57 E. 1st St. in Mesa at 5:30 pm at the Planning and Zoning Board Meeting.

If you want more information, give a call or email and I will send particulars as I receive them. Jim or Alma Jones 831-1525/ jnajones@cybertrails.com.

You can also make a monetary donation.

Check Code Compliance Online
From ?“Just Touching Base?” By Debbie Driscol

Tired of the neighbor?’s junk, broken down vehicles and shabby looking yard? Wondering why nothing is being done by the city since you reported the violation? Go online to www.cityofmesa.org/codecomp
and click on ?“Check the status of a complaint?”. You will need to type in the address, then you can see how the case is progressing or if it is closed and deemed to be in compliance with city code.

Those Nasty Sewer ?“Bugs?”

By Kim Parsons

Some people are noticing a problem with sewer roaches. The number to call at the city is 480-644-3550, press 4, then press 0, to talk to a person. Then let them know that you ARE indeed seeing them. They will send someone out to inspect the manholes that are closest to your house. If they see roaches they will treat them, if they don't, they will back wash and clean the manholes. If you still see them, try to get some brave soul to catch one, put it in a zip lock bag and the city will come back out and treat the manholes with chemicals.

In the last 12 months, one of the areas the city has treated is the area from Baseline to Guadalupe and from Alma School to Country Club. I am not sure if our area was included or not, no one can tell me for certain.

NEW look for the Online Classifieds

By Sheri Powers

I've done something a little different with the Classified Page. I put items for sale, being sought after, etc. under one heading and the services offered under another. It's all still on the Classified Page, but I think it's easier to find what you may be looking for. Also, services offered will not be dated and will remain on that page unless notified to remove at slp@azlawfirm.com.
