Our Newsletter ?…
Over these past few years, you have given me a chance to get to know many of you ?… to come into your lives and into your living rooms. Several of you have spent countless hours in our home working on projects that have benefited our entire neighborhood. Together, I feel we have created a positive outlook in Marlborough and in many ways a sense of belonging. Along the way, we have achieved numerous goals and in doing so have built new relationships. I believe we have not spent our time in vain.
Writing the newsletter month after month ?– along with help from a host of neighbors ?– has been a great experience and afforded me an opportunity to meet many wonderful people that I may never have been fortunate enough to do in a lifetime without the newsletter. We have been honored and rewarded to get to know the neighborhood, our neighbors and the friendships we have made here in Marlborough. You have always treated both Jim and myself with kindness. We truly thank you for that.
This will be the last newsletter I will be publishing. Kelly Wendel will be taking the reins come September 2002. Kelly will need your assistance as you have so graciously given to me over the years. He is young and has lots of fresh new ideas ?– so be anticipating them. As you know from his article of last month, he has had a love for the ?“printed word?” since childhood. He is a ?“natural?” for our neighborhood newsletter. For those of you who do not know Kelly ?– he and wife Monette, have 2 small children, Avalon and Adam and live on Posada. Thank you again Kelly, for beginning a new mission in your busy life by continuing our ?“connectivity?” here in Marlborough as our new publisher.

Retirement brings new meaning to ?“footloose and fancy-free?”. And, since Jim?’s retirement, we will be doing just that ?– taking in a little more travel, fishing and just doing all the things we never had the time to do while he was working. We will still be around as before, but with fewer responsibilities. Well, I could not do that unless our website had someone who was home to maintain it on a full-time basis.
You have heard the name many times before ?… whether she is writing a grant ?… serving on a committee ?… helping with one of the children?’s events ?… or taking a Welcome Basket to a new neighbor as an Ambassador ?– Sandy Scully has been very involved in Marlborough Mesa! She not only takes her Ambassador ?“job?” very seriously but also goes out of her way to help any of these new people with whatever their needs may be. On September 1, 2002, I will be releasing ALL email addresses to Sandy. If anyone does NOT want theirs released, please call or email me and I will remove you from the list. I can assure you that Sandy will also be using your email only for communications within our neighborhood as I have done in the past.

Sandy and I will share in this so that if either of us is not available, the other will still be able to send out a message when necessary. It is certain Sandy will be just as committed when she takes over the new responsibility of our website as she has done in her accomplishments of the past.
NEW AMBASSADORS
We are so fortunate to have couples willing to participate and take the lead. Brent and Cheryl Gregory on Pecos will be filling a much-needed spot in the 1000-1100 block by becoming the Ambassadors for that area in greeting our newcomers and delivering their Welcome Baskets.
They plan on making this a ?“family affair?” as they have raised their family in Marlborough since 1982. Cheryl says the children usually know who is moving long before we adults.
THE NEWSLETTER PROCESS
However and wherever the newsletter is printed, it will be dropped off at Diane and Joe Geshkewich?’s home at 928 W. Pecos. Their number is 756-0437. Diane will count, sort and label the packets as I have done in the past. The newsletters will be on her doorstep for pickup once she sends a message out to each person who delivers those newsletters. Diane is also our Avon Representative in the area who donates items from Avon for all our Welcome Baskets.
NEW NEWSLETTER DISTRIBUTORS
We have three New Representatives who will be delivering our newsletter to your doorstep each month.
On Pecos in the 1000-1100 block, the couple is Charlene and Adrian Reaux . In other areas, they have volunteered willingly several times in the past.
On Wycliff, in the 3100 block and Pampa, in the 1100 block ?… better known as ?“Pampa at the Park?”, Jerri Pennington will see that you get the news.
On Mollera, Jane and Ariel Jones will distribute the newsletter to the 24 homes on their street.
Chauntel Dean delivered the news monthly to the folks on Extension for a very long time but will no longer be able to do so. There are only 9 homes and probably would require only 10-15 minutes of your time. This is the ONLY street who will not have coverage after this issue unless someone comes forth to assume that responsibility. Please consider it. BABYSITTING PAGE
Now caring for the Babysitting Page of our website is Karen Walsh. If your son or daughter is already listed there and you need to make any changes, you may contact her at kwalsh95@aol.com or 839-8006.
Also if your teenager has gone thru the babysitting classes, knows CPR and would like their name placed on there, please contact Karen. This page has been used by many residents for a long time now.
CLASSIFIEDS PAGE
We had just started the Classified Page of the website a couple of months back and Craig Salomon agreed to care for that page in placing and removing any ads that Marlborough Residents had to buy or sell.
Craig has since moved from Marlborough and we need to find someone who actually lives here to care for that page. Please contact me if you can help. This would take so little of your time and those of you who are on the computer daily ?– it would take even less. Contact Alma at 831-1525.
Nearly every weekend, I see many items in front of homes that are for sale. Now that we have a Classified section on our website ?– let?’s PUT IT TO USE. Why not give our classifieds a try?
TEEN JOBS
It is not only the summertime that our teens need our help and support. This could be a great team effort when we as homeowners or renters need a job done and could call on a teen who is looking for ways to earn some extra cash. Our TEENS need jobs in our neighborhood. They cannot get a job at places like Safeway, Dairy Queen, etc. until they are 16 but many of them are so close to that age ?– AND best of all ?– they WANT to work.
We have the Babysitter Connection page on our website for those who do babysitting and our residents use it. There is a tremendous need for a Teen Job Network . Actually, one of our industrious teens could even handle that particular page on our website.
We, as homeowners, could hire these teens who are willing and wanting to work throughout the year on any odd jobs you may have.
They can: mow lawns, other yard work, babysit (night out for Mom and Dad), (might also keep this in mind if you need help with other children when a baby is born), housecleaning, oiling wood cabinets (those never get enough oil in our dry conditions), cleaning windows (one of the chores we never seem to have enough time for), vacation watch your home (outside or inside), animal care (while you are there or gone on vacation, pool care, pass out flyers for realtors or anyone else, car washes, painting (we have an outside wall on Alma School that needs painted ?– and we have the paint), grocery shopping for small items + delivery, computers fixed ?… AND anything else you may think of ?… we have TEENAGERS who are willing and waiting!
Let's give our teens a chance to work in their own neighborhood. Until we have a teen to volunteer caring for the Teen Job Network page, give us a call (Jim or Alma) at 480-831-1525 or 602-321-1139 or via email if you have any ideas or a job that needs done and we will provide the name and number of our teenagers who are interested in that particular "line of work".

SAFETY TEAM NEWS

I have taken over the reins of the Safety Team for M Mesa, only due to Laurel Aslamy having way too much on her plate at the moment. This month, I want to focus on the safety of our kids. We have seen in the news how several little girls were snatched nationally. How to stop it is one issue that needs solved, but the urgent focus right now is to protect our own kids. We cannot let it happen here.
Have you talked to your kids, warning them without overly scaring them? I have, and will again when my daughter return to AZ in a few weeks. If you haven't, I suggest you do.
If you see or hear anything "odd", call the police. If you are leary of calling the police, call me. I know, I am opening myself up to possible problems, but please feel free to call.
I will have more to report next newsletter, but until then, look in our neighborhood website for updates.
HIGH DOLLAR VOLUNTEER

For many teenagers, summer means laying around the
pool, parties with friends and maybe a part-time job, but one Marlborough Mesa resident isn't slacking off this summer.
Dobson High junior Lindsay Embree is attempting to raise $1,850 on behalf of the Multiple Sclerosis Soc. by walking 50 miles in 3 days and she needs the help of Marlborough Mesa residents to raise the money.
"This is something that I thought I could do to help people," Lindsay said. "With a lot of volunteer projects, you have to be 18 years old, but this is something I could do by myself."
Lindsay needs to raise the money by Aug. 15 to qualify for the three-day walk, which will take her and other volunteers from Carlsbad, Calif. to San Diego. She's asking for "whatever amount people want to donate."
Besides gearing up for the walk by training, Lindsay has been asking local businesses for donations and plans to have a raffle sometime in the near future.
"Mom and dad (Trudy and Steve) were a little bit hesitant because they worried about the amount of money, but they do think it is a good idea," Lindsay said. "Hopefully I will be able to pull it off."

2nd ANNUAL SPIRIT OF MESA AWARDS
It is that time again ?– nominations were due no later than Aug. 1, 2002 for the 2nd Annual Spirit of Mesa Awards. An email message was sent to all who are on the Neighborhood Email Group to please nominate someone ?– perhaps on their street for the volunteer time spent with our neighborhood.
Last year you remember, Marlborough Mesa won in the ?“connectivity?” category of Neighborhood Excellence. We won a cash award of $300 to be spent on our neighborhood. Accepting that award was Kevin Biesty and Nancy Borg. We have MANY volunteers within our boundaries and I do hope some of you took the time to send in their name.
Awards will be presented Oct. 12 in a conference and workshop at the East Valley Institute of Technology, 1601 W. Main St.
FINANCIAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Have you been thinking about organizing a Block Watch party for your street or perhaps a Safety or Health Fair, or other neighborhood event? The Financial Advisory Committee wants you to know that we have money available to help you fund such projects. The only requirement is that the event must be for Marlborough Mesa residents.
If you are interested in organizing such an event, you may submit a request for funding to the members of the Financial Advisory Committee. Please include the type of event, or brief description, the date of the event, the amount you are requesting and what the money is to be used for. This can be submitted via email or phone to:

A ?“FIREWORKS?” WEDDIMG
Congratulations to our Marlborough ?“basket lady?”, Becky Trudgeon ?… aka Chvarak. Becky was just married on July 4, 2002! We welcome her new husband Ken and daughter Danielle to Marlborough.
Becky is the one who makes up all of the Welcome Baskets that our Ambassadors deliver to newcomers in our neighborhood.
CODE COMPLIANCE
Residents here in Marlborough have had several issues with other residents over city codes that are not being complied with.
The insert from the City of Mesa you find in this newsletter is a result of the many phone calls to police and code enforcement officers over these violations.
Code officers will be coming through our development in the next few weeks giving tickets to those who are not in compliance with the codes voted upon by voters of the City of Mesa in 2000.
