TOY DRIVE NEEDS LEADER
Help! Our 3ed Annual Christmas Toy Drive that benefits the East Valley Crisis Cebnter is in desperate need of a coordinator. Last year, residents of Marlborough Mesa turned out in force for the 2nd annual toy drive, with more than 100 neighbors opening their hearts - and their wallets - to provide a truck load of toys for children at the East Valley Child Crisis Center.
"The crisis center workers were surprised when we first walked in with the toys and the food," said Kelly Wendel, one of the volunteers. "I think that surprise turned to shock as we continued to bring in more toys and food. By the time we left, their entire front office was packed with stuff. It's great knowing we helped some kids that might not have had a Christmas."
The event kicked off on Dec.15, 2001, with volunteers turning out a massive selection of baked goods, deserts and other goodies as residents began to arrive with their donated toys.
Marlborough Mesa resident Bob Cingel broke out the Santa suit for holiday photos, with more than 40 children getting a chance 40 children getting to sit on Santa's lap and present their Christmas wish list.
Spearheaded by Marlborough Mesa resident Michelle Kolar, the event grew out of efforts by former resident Renee Coehlo, who organized the first Marlborough Mesa Toy Drive in 2000. G.A.I.N PLANNED FOR LATE OCTOBER
G.A.I.N., or Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods is preparing for the annual event, which will take place Oct. 26th. Residents throughout the state will take part in the event, which is designed to encourage Neighborhood Watch programs, fight crime and bring neighbors together.
In 2001, more than 250 parties registered for G.A.I.N., with the deadline for this year's registration set for Oct. 10, 2002. To register, call the Mesa Police Community Relations Division at 480-644-2300.
CLEAN SWEEP IS COMING TO MARLBOROUGH MESA
The City of Mesa's Solid Waste Division is providing roll-off containers for our neighborhood clean-up. These containers are for ALL neighbors to use. No containers will be left over a weekend. We are allowned to sign up for Clean Sweep two times per year (April & October). With your cooperation, the dumpsters will be here again in April if we follow these rules:
Examples of ACCEPTABLE items in the containers: furniture, wood, palm fronds, old toys, mattresses/box springs, tree branches, BBQ grills (no propane), general household debris (no food waste), un-bagged green waste such as grass, leaves and branches. Examples of items NOT to be placed in the containers: rock, dirt, concrete, block, construction materials, batteries, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, paint, tires, oil or hazardous waste. NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES
WELCOME BASKETS NEEDED
With interest rates so low and more people making moves -- we have a real need for more baskets used for the 'Welcome Baskets" in greeting new neighbors. Becky, our "basket lady" is nearly out of baskets. She would rather not spend the PRIDE grant monies on those if you have any baskets around that are not being used. Only one stipulation this time: They MUST HAVE handles. It was difficult to package all the goodies without one.
SPIRIT OF MESA AWARDS
The Spirit of Mesa Awards Conference will be held on Oct. 12, 2002. We have several people in MM who have been nominated. If they are to receive an award, they will be contacted by the City of Mesa Neighborhood Offices very soon. The best contact there would be: Deborah_Driscol@ci.mes.as.us.

NEIGHBORS HELPING OUT
Olla Avenue resident Nate Reynard stepped up to help nis neighbors during the Aug. 28 microburst. Nate supplied his neighbors with power from his generator to keep their refrigerators going. Way to go Nate!
FROST FACTS
Frost Elementary's parent-teacher organization is teaming up with Papa John's Pizza to raise money for the school. When you place a pizza order on Monday, Oct. 14, tell Papa John's you are calling on behalf of Frost Elementary School. The school will receive 20 percent of the profits on all sales. In addition, the class with the largest amount of orders will receive a pizza party from Papa Johns. In September, this event raised more than $250, and the PTO hopes to exceed that amount in October. Give them a hand.
The next Frost PTO meeting is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 7 at 6:30p.m. in the school's media center.
