4th ANNUAL EASTER EGG HUNT and COMMUNITY PICNIC

If you live within the boundaries of Alma School and Extension ?… Guadalupe Road and the Chandler border ?– this is Marlborough Mesa and you are invited!!

SATURDAY, April 3rd
10:00 AM (at our park)

Ages for the egg hunt are from 11 years old and under

As always, we need adult and teen volunteers to run this event. If you would like to help you can call or email Linda Murphy at 480-820-5742 / asufan2002@yahoo.com. If you are a high school student this can count for your volunteer hours needed for National Honors and Service Learning.

Like last year, we will try to provide the picnic with the help of donations. Anytime between March 22nd and March 31st the following items can be dropped off at
3048 S. Spruce Street:

Six packs of soda or water, bags of potato chips or Doritos, hot dogs

A reminder:
?• A parent MUST accompany all children.
?• All parents are responsible for ?“going thru?” the bags and baskets of what their children may receive.
?• You may want to consider bringing; sunscreen, a chair, field games for children, etc. If you do, please remember to put your name on those items.
?• In case of lots of rain ?– this event will be rescheduled and posted on our website.

MARLBOROUGH MESA NEIGHBORS'
MEETING WITH CRUCIAL CITY DEPARTMENTS

Abandon car? Loud parties? Unsightly weeds? Do you want to know how this affects our Marlborough Mesa neighborhood and who to contact about it? The answer to these and many more questions will be available at a meeting with many crucial city departments. The meeting will be at 7:00 pm at our park on Friday April 23rd.

VICTIMS' RIGHTS FOR
REGISTERED NEIGHBORHOODS

Effective March 1, 2004, the City of Mesa Police Department has implemented a policy addressing victims?’ rights for neighborhoods who are registered. This policy creates an opportunity for a neighborhood to be identified as ?“victim?” when certain crimes are committed within the neighborhood. This designation as a victim to a crime entitles the neighborhood to certain rights that have not been traditionally available to neighborhoods. The back page of this newsletter will explain what these rights are and to what crimes they apply.

In order to exercise these rights, a neighborhood must be registered with the City of Mesa?’s Neighborhood Outreach Office. (We, in MM are registered.) The name identified as the Primary Contact on the registration form will be the ONLY person from that neighborhood able to exercise these rights, UNLESS another resident is identified to take on this specific task.

to take this responsibility.

It would be a great opportunity for someone who would like to ?“volunteer at home?”. Presently, my name (Alma Jones) is the one on the registration form. If residents from the neighborhood request neighborhood victims?’ rights, they will be directed to the Victims?’ Rights Representative for their neighborhood.

Neighborhood victim?’s rights must be exercised on a case-by-case basis. The Victims?’ Rights Representative from the neighborhood will need to contact the Mesa Police Department regarding a specific case to request victims rights be applied. This request can be made by calling 480-644-2300. If possible, please have the date, time, and location or case number of the case when calling.

This policy is an important tool that can be used to make Mesa?’s neighborhoods safer and healthier. Please feel free to contact our Neighborhood Outreach Coordinator with any questions regarding this new policy. Our Coordinator is Deborah Driscol at 644-5434.

Unfortunately, because of the volume of cases processed by Mesa Police Department each day, resources are simply unavailable to actually notify neighborhoods in the event that a listed crime occurs.

It will be the responsibility of each neighborhoods?’ Victims Rights Representative to contact the Mesa Police Department to verify whether one of the designated crimes has occurred.

If members of the neighborhood become aware of a particular arrest, they can notify the registered neighborhood Victims?’ Rights Representative and request that verification be made.

To RETAIN your neighborhood?’s victims?’ rights, the name and phone number of the Representative acting on behalf of the neighborhood MUST be kept current. If a new representative is selected, the Neighborhood Outreach Office MUST be notified of the change or the Neighborhood WILL forfeit its Victim?’s Rights.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:

When Do Neighborhood
Representatives Have Rights As Victims?

Your neighborhood representative is entitled to rights as a victim under certain circumstances:

?• If the arrested suspect lives within the boundaries of your neighborhood association

or

?• If the crime happened within the boundaries of the neighborhood

and

?• If the crime is a felony drug (marijuana, narcotic, or dangerous drugs) or prostitution offense

or

?• If the building or house is being used to sell or manufacture drugs

or
?• If stolen cars are being dismantled and used for parts (a ?“Chop Shop?” criminal operation)



What Specific Rights Are Neighborhood Representatives Entitled to?

?• Notice of certain court proceedings (such as the release of the defendant back into your neighborhood)

?• The right to ask the court to reconsider release decisions if your neighborhood was not notified

?• The right to be present at court hearings

?• The right to be present at and to testify at dispositions and sentencings

?• The right to be heard in court and the right to tell the court how the crime affected your neighborhood and community. (You can actually speak at the court hearing or provide the court with a written or taped statement.)

?• The right to privacy (You have the right not to have to reveal your home address, phone numbers or other private information in court)

These rights apply to both juvenile and adult courts.


How Does My Neighborhood
Representative Exercise Victims?’ Rights?

First, your neighborhood Representative must be registered with the City of Mesa Neighborhood Outreach Office at 480-644-5700

Next, an individual must be selected to represent and act on behalf of your neighborhood. This person must also be registered as your official representative.

Each time your Neighborhood Representative wishes to exercise victims?’ rights, they must contact the Mesa Police Department at 480-644-2300 and let them know that your neighborhood wishes to exercise its rights.

You will need the following information:

?• The date and time of the crime or arrest

?• The location of the crime

?• The law enforcement agency case number (if you have it)

New Landscape Watering Reminder takes guesswork out of watering your plants. The City of Mesa Utilities Conservation Section is providing a new service to take the guesswork out of knowing how often to water your plants with a monthly Landscape Watering Reminder. Adjusting your
irrigation for the season can save 30 to 50 percent on landscape watering. The Landscape Watering Reminder will provide an e-mail at the
beginning of each month explaining how often to water your landscape and a reminder to set the irrigation timer to the season.

To receive this monthly e-mail reminder, follow these steps:
1. Visit www.cityofmesa.org
2. From the home page, select E-mail News Lists from the left navigation bar.
3. Choose Landscape Watering Reminder and follow the registration
instructions.

This service is open to anyone with internet access, so sign up today!
We'll be sending out the first e-mail soon, so keep an eye out for it.
