Neighborhood Meeting - Sept. 23
By Aaron Schepler (Emerson)
The neighborhood meeting on September 23 was a resounding success. The meeting attracted about 35 of our neighbors. Also in attendance were Debbie Driscol from the City Neighborhood Office, Fire Battalion Chief Sam Halverson, Dale Brunk from the Traffic Advisory Board, Officer Carlos Gastelum of the Mesa Police Department and City Councilmember Dennis Kavanaugh. Not surprisingly, traffic and safety issues dominated the discussion.
Speed humps were an especially hot topic. Brunk discussed in some detail the City's policy for installing speed humps. (Copies of the policy were distributed at the meeting. Alma may still have a few copies if you're interested but weren't able to attend.) After hearing input from neighbors, Brunk agreed to conduct traffic studies on several of our streets, including Plata; Posada; Obispo between Emerson and Extension and between Spruce and Mollera; Portobello; and Pampa. Assuming those streets meet certain criteria for traffic volume and speed, these streets may see speed humps in the near future.
For the first time, speed humps have become a possibility on Emerson Street. Emerson is currently designated as a fire route and is ineligible for speed humps. But after hearing some persuasive arguments by Doug Hansen (Emerson), Battalion Chief Halverson agreed to consider changing that designation pending the outcome of the traffic study. Well done, Doug!
A traffic light may also be in the works for the intersection of Pecos and Alma School. Brunk agreed to study the issue but cautioned that the intersection failed to meet eligibility criteria the last time it was considered. An October 1998 study showed that only 15% of the traffic turned left at the intersection-too few cars to warrant installation of a traffic signal.
Vacation Watch
By Aaron Schepler (Emerson)
Did you know that the Mesa Police will watch your home while you are on vacation? According to Officer Gastelum, under the Vacation Watch program, residents may call and advise the department that they will be going out of town. About once a day, a patrol will swing by and check your home. Call (480) 644-2030 for details.
Report from our Treasurers
By Rick and Ginger Richter (Obispo)
As of 9-15-2000 there was $586.00 remaining in our Marlborough Fund. What do we want to do with these monies? Picnics? Some people would like another sign at Pecos and Mollera w/help of United Way? Another Grant would need to be written up if we should go this route. We need a couple of volunteers to do this. Help - this is YOUR leftover monies. Please post your suggestions on the website in the Talk About It Section so that the entire neighborhood can benefit from your suggestions. Go to: www.neighborhoodlink.com/mesa/marlborough
Mesa's New Code Compliance
Once Mesa passed prop 400, new rules and regulations affect us all. These new codes appeared in the Across The Back Fence Newsletter published by the City of Mesa's Neighborhood Offices last month. It can also be found online under the Community Pages of our website.
If you would like to receive their newsletter to your home (via snail mail), all you need to do is call Neighborhood Offices at 644-4067 and give them your name and address. It is a monthly publication.
It would be nice for those without the internet to have this one page article. If anyone can volunteer the time needed to have that one page printed (FREE to do at the Neighborhood Offices) for next month's newsletter and then staple all 469 sheets to each newsletter - call me - I have a copy of it. My number is 831-1525 or 602-321-1139. My email is jnajones@cybertrails.com.
Natural Recipes for Home & Garden
This pamphlet put out by the City of Mesa takes us back to homemade remedies for:

?· alternatives to household hazardous products,
?· insect traps,
?· plants that naturally repel insects and
?· animal repellent sprays
These pamphlets are available in the "Make a Difference" Basket on my front porch at 1031 W. Posada ?… just come and pick one (or more) up.
Tree Trimming
By Jimmie Dean (Emerson)
We had approximately 20 neighbors who contacted me but only 13 who signed on to have their Palm and Eucalyptus trees cut and trimmed. I'm pleased to report that the work for those 13 neighbors have been completed (100%). I'm waiting on other neighbors to respond and it is my hope the newsletter will aid in getting the word out to other neighbors who may not have heard about this effort. Contact me at: 480-345-2509 or JAloha50@aol.com.
Remember, our goal has been and will continue to be...to make our neighborhood the BEST in Mesa.

A "Walk-a-Thon" Thru Our Neighborhood
In the Aug/Sept Newsletter, there was a misprint about this event. It will be held October 14, 2000. We will meet at our Park at 9:30 am.
Gary Fossell (Portobello) will be heading this up. It will be a "pick-up all the debris throughout our neighborhood day". October is a beautiful month - perfect for this type of project. This will be easier than last Oct. when we painted one of our perimeter fences on Alma School ?… remember that?
In the gutters and sides of yards, there are many items that need disposed of properly. YOUR help is needed though. Bring a plastic garbage bag & glove.
Some Notes ...
This will indeed be a big day for the residents of Posada and Spruce.
Cable America is coming to our neighborhood thanks to the persistance of Suzanne Weaver (Pampa). See more about it as she posts the newest update in the Discussion Area.

To Remove or Not to Remove???
By Renee' Coelho (Posada)
There are two pages on the website that were added at the beginning of the summer. The Teen Summer Job Hotline, and the Marlborough Classifieds. Summer is over, and the hotline will be removed unless I receive some feedback that you would like it left there. I also need your comments as to our Classifieds page, since you can now enter your own ad in the new city-wide classified on the web page. If I don't receive any feedback about these, they will be removed on October 15. Please email me at ladyspirit48@yahoo.com Thank you.
Neighborhood Messages Anyone?
As new people move into our area, our Ambassadors visit them and present our Welcome Packet. Among the items in this packet is an information sheet asking for the name, phone number and email address of our new neighbors. It is important that these be filled out and returned in a timely manner. Please be aware that your email address is not for publication and is kept confidential. We respect the privacy of our neighbors but also feel that you would want to receive important neighborhood news.
Once in a while, someone will send me a question anonymously - I will always answer you to the best of my ability, but I cannot put you on our "list" of people to send neighborhood messages to. I have my system set up to send "Neighborhood" messages, but it is broken down by streets. So, if you send your name/email, I also need your street.
This has been a very effective tool in "staying connected" and knowing what is going on throughout our subdivision. For instance, everyone who had email already in the "Neighborhood Group" was notified of the Neighborhood Meeting Aaron Schepler wrote about on our front page - a few days before it happened. As a result, we had an excellent turnout with many questions answered and decisions made that may affect us all.
This is easy, free, informative and safe! If you have not sent your email in OR have changed it - please update me at jnajones@cybertrails.com . You may reach Jim and Alma Jones at 480-831-1525 or 602-321-1139. We live at 1031 W. Posada Avenue. When you have something that the entire community would benefit from - please put it in the Discussion area of our website at: neighborhoodlink.com/mesa/marlborough/
The Marlborough Singles
By Renee' Coelho (Posada)
The singles group meeting that was scheduled for Friday, September 30 has been canceled due to some health issues I am having. If someone else wishes to take up this group, please let me know. I have all the names, addresses and phone numbers of those that attended the last meeting., and will be happy to pass them on to whomever wishes to take on this task. Email or call me at 831-0312.
The New Look of our Website
If you have not looked at the website recently, there are some definite changes, among which are:
1) New Photo Features in 4 areas
2) Update Member Profiles - especially important, as Neighborhood Link is ready to launch more new features. After you sign in, click on "Update Your Profile" in the upper left-hand corner.
3) Community Pig-e-Bank Program, whereby we, as a community can earn dollars by shopping online thru our homepage. This is definitely in its infancy stage, but check it out - suggestions?
