The "Gift"
By Renee?’ Coelho
The spirit of giving comes in many different ways. As you may remember, during our Silent Auction, there was a fire at the home of Kelly and Monette Wendel (Posada). In the spirit of caring, donations were collected for the family, and the money presented to them that evening.
Recently, the "gift" was returned, as Monette and Kelly presented Marlborough Mesa with a check for $200 to be put into the neighborhood fund account. They wanted to express their appreciation to the neighborhood. They are now back "home" and are very happy to be here.
They wrote a ?“Thank You?” in the Discussion area of the website some time ago. For those of you who do not have access to the internet, we are printing their letter in its entirety:
?“Dear Friends and Neighbors...
Our family wishes to thank all of you for the support and friendship you have given us after our recent house fire. We are grateful to live in a neighborhood that is so giving and caring. It was amazing how people we didn?’t even know prior to this event just reached out to help us in any way they could.
While the fire was bad, it?’s not the worst thing that has ever happened to us, though it ranks pretty high. While it was depressing to watch the place go up in smoke, our most important item ?— our family ?— was unharmed, and for that, we are eternally grateful.
For the most part, the things we lost were just that ?— things, and they can mostly be replaced. While we did lose some precious items from Kelly?’s parents, the memories will always remain.
The last six weeks have been busy with post-fire activity. Our house is well on the way to being rebuilt, and we are hoping we can get back into it by Sept. 1, 2000. We are truly fortunate to have purchased a house in Marlborough Mesa and we can?’t wait to be back among all of you.
With the deepest appreciation,
Kelly, Monette and Avalon Wendel?”
I am sure that not one of the people who gave that night of the Silent Auction ever expected to have it returned in this manner. This indeed shows that the gifts we give sometimes come back to us in unexpected ways. Happy Holidays everyone!
Holiday Luminaries
By Linda Murphy (Spruce)
For the past 2 years, the neighbors on Spruce have used the festive ?“placing of the luminaries?” in each driveway as 1 of their required Blockwatch Meetings for the year.
They would like to encourage ALL streets to participate in this fun holiday tradition SATURDAY, DECEMBER 23rd. It?’s easy and fun and you can make this 1 of YOUR Blockwatch Meetings also. The children love it! Last year 2 of their bags caught fire and the kids loved that part best of all!
New Rental Liaison
Michele Lesher (Pecos) took on a HUGE task as she endeavors to locate the owners of property here in Marlborough who own rentals. She has mailed letters and is making contact with each individual.
One purpose is to get them ?“connected?” with our Neighborhood Email so they, as owners, can be kept up-to-date as to the ?“goings-on?” in Marlborough. Also, if a home needs attention, (as many of the owners are out-of-state) she will know how to make that contact to get results if there is a problem.
Michele?’s email is: rentalliaison@yahoo.com
If you rent a home and KNOW the owners, please ?–send her their email or phone number so she may make the connection. If you ARE the renter and have not joined the Neighborhood Email Group, send your name, email and street address to the above email or to me at: jnajones@cybertrails.com
As I said, this is a huge job and any help we can give her will be much appreciated.
Traffic Survey Results
Survey results are in from the City of Mesa. The complete statistics on every street are on the website at www.neighborhoodlink.com/mesa/marlborough/
in the Talk About It section.
Briefly, there is not enough traffic at enough high speeds to warrant speed humps or stop lights as of November 19, 2000. Exceptions may be Emerson, Extension and Portobello and they will be recounted between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but before Christmas break for the schools.
Obispo between Emerson/ Extension qualifies.
However, because traffic volume is less than 500 vehicles per day, residents are required to help with installation costs ($500.00 per hump) if the residents of the area agree to the installation. The city will need to have a liaison who lives on that street.
Peralta is the only street that met ALL requirements.
Traffic signal studies are still on-going at Alma School and Pampa/Pecos or are now under review.
Marlborough Toy Drive -- our 1st
By Renee?’ Coelho
In the spirit of the coming holidays, a Toy Drive is now underway. Toys and clothes are needed for the children at the East Valley Child Crisis Center. A visit from the ?“Marlborough Mesa Santa Crew?” would really make their Christmas special. The Center needs gifts or clothes for age's infant up to 12 years of age. They do request that the gifts are unwrapped, as it is easier for them to distribute.
There will be a "collection drop off" at the park on Saturday, December 16th from 1:00-3:00 pm, or you can bring your donations to my home at 939 West Posada anytime BEFORE that date. If you need them to be picked up, call me and I will gladly do that as well. Let's all make this a success and start a tradition for our community. What a way to show the true ?… "Spirit of Christmas".
Those of you that have children, can you imagine your child waking up on Christmas morning with ''nary a present to be found''? When you make a purchase for your own children or others in your family, please pick up a little something extra for the Marlborough Toy Drive. Help make their Christmas a little brighter.
We are also looking for volunteer "Santas" to help with this project, whether it be collections, coming to the park, joining in to deliver the toys, or anything you can to help with. If you are interested in helping the less fortunate children, please call me at 831-0312.
The Santa Delivery Crew will take the gifts to the Center at 4:00 pm December 16th.

New Ambassadors and Blockwatch Leaders
Kim and Rick Parsons (Posada) are the newest Ambassadors and Blockwatch Leaders. In addition, they bought baskets for the new Welcome Packets and have delivered their first basket to our newest neighbors on Posada, Debbie and Jason.
Also, last year, they are the ones who went door to door in the 800 block to have people come to the G.A.I.N. event and get them to sign up in order to keep our signs. They are go-getters -- literally!
Kim and Rick have 2 children, Levi and Helen, 2 dogs, a kitten, a turtle and they say that?’s all folks! They have been a resident in Marlborough for almost 5 years now.
School Tax Credits
By Suzanne Weaver
Many of you are aware of the state's ECA (Extra Curricular School Tax Credit) that enables taxpayers to receive up to a $200 state tax credit and a charitable contribution deduction on your Federal if you itemize. The tax credit will give a dollar for dollar reduction in state income taxes for the money contributed to the public schools. It is a terrific way to direct where you want your tax dollars to go. Many of the extra curricular programs are not funded well, if at all, by our district.
The contribution must be made by December 31, 2000 to claim the credit for the 2000 tax year.
You may have seen the article in the Tribune a month ago regarding the horrible condition of the instruments for Dobson High's Marching Band.
Dobson has a new director this year, who views marching band as a priority. This was not the case in the past. He is on a drive to replace almost all of the instruments. Most of the equipment has not been replaced since the school opened 21 years ago.
If you have not made a contribution using your
ECA credit, Dobson's Marching Band could surely use the funds. The cost to replace all instruments is approximately $100,000. Jon Gomez, the director, is using all connections to get corporate sponsors and outside gifts. He is encouraging the Dobson community to apply the credit to Dobson Bands.
If you have an interest in fine children, great music, 1 of the best programs in the state, and our neighborhood marching band that is recognized across the state by their uniforms, please contact me for more information. I have the cards and description of the ECA program.
If band is not your thing and you have an interest in another student activity, I encourage you to use the ECA credit, for the funds do indeed go to the program you choose. 480-838-5036 scweaver@primenet.com
