A Glance Back and a Vision Forward....

I don't know about everyone, but for me the year 2000 seems to have come and gone in a flash. That being considered, I was amazed when I read through the neighborhood timeline for this year and realized all that was accomplished. Some of the highlights consist of:
Entrance signs paid in full and installed at all three entrances to our subdivision.
We were the first neighborhood in Mesa to sign up for Clean Sweep and Green Sweep online.
Surveys were sent to every home which resulted in action taken to address various issues such as speed bumps, traffic lights, etc.
Ambassadors were established throughout the neighborhood to welcome our newcomers.
And we have closed out our year with a neighborhood toy drive for those less fortunate.
We have so many things to be proud of and so many things to be thankful for, including all of those who gave of themselves to make the above
accomplishments possible. Given the talent and sense of commitment shown by this community, I'm sure we can look forward to continued success in this new year.
Speaking of success, and with this being the time of year that we all seem to take stock, I'd like to leave you with one of my favorite quotations:

The Unwanted Guest
During the month of December, I received an unwanted ?“gift?” by way of a VIRUS! My computer has now been ?“cleansed?” of those nasty little critters, but ?… many of the names in my Address Book for our little community were lost.
There is always someone very willing in this neighborhood to help anyone ?– this time it was ME they would be helping. I must give my thanks to Jens Malmborg (Peralta) (also his wife, Julie, for putting up with me) and Renee?’ Coelho (Posada) for their computer expertise in saving and transferring the addresses that were remaining.
Now the hard part -- I need YOUR help:
If you have NOT received an email from me during December 2000 and have received them in the past, please take one moment and send me your:
Name, street address and phone number plus any additional email addresses where you wish to receive mail.
Have you changed your current email since September? That was the last time the addresses were saved. Please update me with those. Send to jnajones@cybertrails.com
Being able to ?“communicate?” as a community has indeed brought information to all of us much more quickly. When all of the car break-ins and thefts were occurring in Nov. and Dec., a message was sent to everyone to be aware. I believe there were a total of 10 vehicles affected before the thieves were finally apprehended. At the very least, we all KNEW to take extra precautions because we were aware.
One last reminder: I will NEVER send YOU any attachments and I will NEVER OPEN any. This is the only way I can fully protect all the email addresses that I now have. If anyone knows of any other ways ?– please let me know. I have Norton Anti-Virus and download it weekly.
2nd Annual Spruce Street New Year?’s Eve Block Party
The first one was great but what a ?“smash?” hit the second was!!! Michele and Andy Geramanis were the ?“chief?” coordinators with Linda and Mike Murphy, Elaine and Marty Klopper and Diane and Chris LeFevre working with them. Bill and Janice Burden even set up ?“camp?” on their driveway.
Spruce Street had been blocked off earlier in the day and even a porta-potty delivered! They were indeed READY to PARTY!
There were many tables and chairs set up in the street with a couple of long ones for all the food that everyone who participated brought. We had heaters and wood-burning fire pits throughout.
One of the greatest things about their party was seeing the fun the children of all ages were having. They were in the street riding their newest Christmas gift ?– the SCOOTER with one little Mekinna ?“hitching a ride?” with Stacey! There were games, dancing, a live DJ and never a dull moment.
And let?’s not forget all the raffle gifts. There must have been at least 3 dozen of them ?– quite the variety ?– some for kids ?– some for the adults.

Mail Stolen

Dec 28, 2000 we were informed that mail has been stolen from mailboxes on Pampa and Portobello over the past two months. This mail was outgoing and incoming. If you fear that mail has been stolen from your mailbox contact the Postal Inspector at 602-223-3660. Do not call the police. This is a federal crime.
The postal inspector did suggest that mailboxes with locks may be the only alternative to safely receiving mail. If you have any information about stolen mail please let me know at: Ph. 480-887-7749, AZCAT21877@aol.com or 915 W. Portobello Ave.
Our Unfortunate Loss
We here in Marlborough have lost one of ?“our own?”. Carol lost her husband of 22 years on Osage, the first of December. All of her family is in another state and she will be returning there as soon as she is packed and ready. Her home sold in just 2 days and will be closing on January 24th.
She has many items for sale, and being alone and somewhat vulnerable right now, is a little uncertain about placing those ads. Her phone number is 752-0509. If you would like to see or purchase any of the listed items, please contact her. They are:

January 4 Meeting w/Cox Communications
There will be a brief meeting Jan. 4th at 1:00 pm in the park with Dan from Cox talking about cable upgrades we will be receiving. They will begin ?“digging our yards up again?” early this month. If you have concerns, questions ?– please be there. Let?’s let them know we are watching.
Please check the Discussions on the website. Chris Allen (Plata) has done a terrific job at gathering info from all sources. ?… advice ?– take pictures BEFORE!
Traffic Lights Pecos/Pampa and Alma School
Recent traffic light studies done by the City of Mesa are in. The entire study is on our website at www.neighborhoodlink.com/mesa/marlborough/ under Community Pages/Traffic Study.
Briefly, we do not qualify for a signal at Pecos and Alma School. They are still working on the numbers at Pampa and Alma School, but are doubtful that one will qualify either.
Portobello Ave. Speed Humps

As Florida counted and recounted, Portobello did too -- for speed hump qualification. We did qualify! The average speed on the street is 33 mph. We have an average of 575 cars PER DAY!
Now comes the hard part: 70% of the houses to be surveyed for the speed humps must agree to have them placed. The survey will begin in Jan. Those residents being surveyed will be invited to a meeting. Mesa City Employees who will answer questions and concerns will attend. Please note that like other homeowners on Portobello, we have not made a decision that speed humps are the best alternative for our street. Therefore, this meeting - before the survey begins, will be an important one. Once the survey begins, we have 120 days to complete it. If you live on Portobello and would like to assist with the speed hump survey it would be appreciated. Please contact Nancy Borg at 480-897-7749.
Clean Sweep Coordinator Needed -- 2 x's per year
We still need a coordinator if we are to have neighborhood dumpsters in the spring. We have 2 volunteers to take signatures to the City, but no one to make those reservations. Please call 831-1524 or 602-321-1139 if you can help.
This is a very EASY step to take. If you are near a phone -- anyone can make this call and be the "contact person" for which the City of Mesa would have "sign up" for our neighborhood.
Please consider this -- I have volunteered to collect all the emails, but if we as a neighborhood would like to see these dumpsters on a regular basis (2 times per year) someone else needs to volunteer for the reservations part.
