Easter Egg Hunt and Community Picnic
If you live within the boundaries of Alma School Road and Extension ... Guadalupe and the Chandler border -- this is Marlborough Mesa and you are invited!!! Have YOU signed up for this event on Saturday, April 14th at 11:00 am yet? It is not too late. Please RSVP at:
Call: Sandy Scully (Emerson) at 345-9823 OR Email: eastergroup2001@yahoo.com
Tell us: How many adults and how many children (+ ages). This will be most helpful as we are still purchasing food and drinks. This is a FREE lunch and egg hunt provided by a grant from Mesa United Way. There will be prizes, prizes and more prizes.
We have some ?“special?” guests who will be at this function. They are just some of the people who help us on an ongoing basis with the things we are able to accomplish. They are: Councilman Dennis Kavanaugh, Debbie Driscol from the Neighborhood Offices and Carol Reed from Mesa United Way.
The park will be divided into 4 age groups for the Egg Hunt: 3 years and below; 4-6; 7-9 and 10-13.
However, we have some 13 year olds who would rather "hide" those eggs than "hunt" them - and that?’s ok too - we will need their help. For anyone wishing to help setup, please be at the park at 10:30 am Saturday, April 14th.
Our final Planning Meeting is April 7th at 3:00 pm at Linda and Mike Murphy's home at 3048 S. Spruce. If you would like to help - please come.
A few ?“things?” to think about:
*All children MUST be accompanied by a parent.
*All parents are responsible for ?“going thru?” the bags and baskets of what their children may receive.
* You may want to consider bringing a chair, field games for children, etc. IF you do, please remember to put your name on those items.
* In case of lots of rain ?– this event will be held the following Saturday (April 21st)
COOKIES FROM HOME
Once we received the grant for $300, it seemed like a "lot of money" for one project ... but, as it turns out, once you provide food and drinks (for 200+ people) and the hunt and prizes for all the children, we have had to CUT some corners.
The decision of EasterGroup2001 was to go ahead and make this an Easter Egg Hunt the children would never forget! We have put together 4 large Easter Baskets for the grand prize in each age category. There are probably 10-12 secondary prizes PLUS we decided that no child will go away empty handed ?– they will ALL receive a small bag of goodies. We all know it is difficult for a small child to sometimes understand when others get the BIG prize and they get absolutely nothing, thus our decision to at best provide something for all.
I said all of that to say that those "corners" we are cutting would be DESSERT! We were planning to provide cookies. Since the budget will not allow for this now, we are asking that a few of you who like to bake (or buy) ?– to please consider bringing just a dozen cookies to share.
New Spring Project
by Ren?©e Ross Cefalu
While standing in front of our home recently, thinking about some landscaping changes we plan to make, I noticed that our street number had once been painted on the curb. The numbers are now so faded that they are barely visible. While our street number is on the front of our home, I thought how nice it would be for visitors (especially at night) to easily identify our home without having to search. The next day, as I drove through Marlborough Mesa, I noticed many homes also had the same fading numbers. How nice it would be to spruce up these faded numbers ?… not only to contribute to the look of the neighborhood, but also raising some money for our Marlborough Mesa fund in the process.
After speaking with the City of Mesa and the Mesa Fire Department, their recommendation was a white background with black letters. Their experience indicated that this was the easiest to read. We have a stencil of the ?‘Marlborough Mesa tree?’, and plan to add that in teal, possibly to the side of the numbers, or on the side or the top of the curb (wherever we decide not to put the numbers ?– see one example above). Suggestions are certainly welcome. We?’d like to ask a $10 donation from those who would like their curb painted. We plan on gathering the supplies and starting in the next few weeks. Next month?’s newsletter will indicate a few of our ?‘volunteer?’ homes that will have their curbs already painted, if you?’d like to see the finished product.
I?’ve already started to gather volunteers for the project, but welcome anyone who wants to put in a few hours at their convenience. This might possibly fulfill the requirements of someone who has a community service requirement for school credit, or who just wants to help out. Please feel free to contact me at home at 839-8069.
ACRYLIC SEAL COATING COMING IN APRIL
Cox Communications say they will be completely finished in here before the end of April. This will be just in time for our streets to be seal coated by the City of Mesa at that time.
Notification process: WATCH your FRONT door, as hangers from the City will be placed there usually a couple of days prior to the actual sealing. This will also give you information as to the nearest cross street where you may park any extra vehicles you now have parked on the street
NEW PRIDE GRANT
by Sandy Scully (Emerson)
We have the possibility of another PRIDE Grant from Mesa United Way for whatever Marlborough Mesa Residents choose to have help with.
We are open for suggestions. Thus far we have:
1. To purchase the remaining Marlborough Mesa Sign on the north side of Pecos and Alma School at our entrance.
2. Curb Painting Project?– to purchase supplies (see Ren?©e Cefalu?’s article).
3. Fence the rest of the park along the canal. Parks and Rec will help foot the bill by contributing half, but we would have to come up with the other half.
4. There are some who wish ?“other?” community functions, like what we are doing with the Easter Egg Hunt and Community Picnic be funded for the remainder of the year.
We can apply for a total of $4,400 BEFORE June of this year. This is double what it was last year ?– but ONLY until June. (United Way must get rid of the monies granted them or they will lose it. Obviously, we need to do this ASAP. I will be mailing this out in April.
If there are any further suggestions, please contact me via email at sscully@mtntel.com or on my home phone at 345-9823.

BASKETS BY BECKY
Becky Chvarak (Pampa) will be putting together the ?“ingredients?” for the Marlborough Welcome Baskets. Up until now, we have only been able to have Welcome Packets. Becky is very talented and has already ?“packaged?” 5 baskets.
We do not need many of these baskets, but we need them large enough for a folder 9 ?½ x 11 ?½ to fit ?– plus all the other items. Sooo, don?’t through away those Easter Baskets just yet! Bring them by 1031 W. Posada and I will see that Becky gets them. Chances are most of the residents have never seen these Welcome Baskets. We will be bringing one to the park for the Easter Egg Hunt and Picnic on 4-14-2001. For those who will not be at the picnic, a picture of one basket is in the newsletter online.
Already some nice people dropped off a couple of baskets at our home. Only thing is ?… I don?’t know WHO to thank??? Perhaps the ?“Early?” Easter Bunny! (Becky will put them to good use.)
Clean Sweep Containers
by Ginger Richter (Obispo)
Mark your calendars ?– from April 3rd thru 13th , sometime during that time period, a container will be on YOUR street. They will not remain on our streets over any weekend. The following are ACCEPTABLE items for the containers: Brush, toys, furniture, grills, wood, palm fronds, washers/dryers, bikes, non-freon appliances.
The following are UNACCEPTABLE items: Rock, dirt, concrete, block or other construction materials, tires, oil, batteries, anti-freeze, paint, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, hazardous waste.
For the above items that CANNOT be placed in the dumpsters, here are the numbers for disposal + fees:

DO YOU OWN A BUSINESS?
Several people who LIVE here in Marlborough have taken advantage of our new Welcome Baskets by placing a little something of value into them. In turn, their business card is attached ?– thus new residents ?“know where to go?” for these goods and services. Please consider this ?– call 831-1525.
If you own a business and would like to ?“advertise?” in this way ?– the cost is certainly affordable! Those who are taking advantage of this so far are: Becky Chvarak (Gold Canyon Candle), Cecil Duarte (Realtor), Michele Geramanis (Pampered Chef) & Mary and Roy Rednour (Lawn Mower/GoKarts).
Our local Safeway (Guad./Alma Sch.) always include something, as well as APS, SRP and the various departments of the City of Mesa.
SCULPTURES IN THE STREETS-2001
They?’re baaack ?… the statues on Main Street in downtown Mesa. This is the second year for these bronze statues located on the sidewalks of the downtown shops and businesses. They are not the same statues as last year, which makes it even more worthwhile to see. The young girl with the hulla hoop is priceless! You must SEE them to appreciate these works of art. There are also a few of them on adjacent streets.
