PRIDE Grant
Because of Sandy Scully, and her time and efforts in writing this, we now have another PRIDE Grant in the amount of $4,400. This will aid in completing our signage ?– (4th and final); the fence at the park and the curb-painting project. We received the grant because we, as a neighborhood, had raised at least as much as we ask for.
Many thanks to the various fund-raising events and all of those individuals who made them happen.
NEIGHBORS GARDEN CAFE
Gil and Nancy Guggisberg, owners, will be placing a card and menu for a FREE entr?©e to any new family moving into our neighborhood that receives a Welcome Basket. They are joining several other businesses that already include something.
Their food is wonderful and very fresh with some little ?“extras?” to go with your breakfast or lunch. Give them a try if you have not already. They are open 7 days a week from 6 am to 2:30 pm. They are located in the NW shopping center at the corner of Alma School and Guadalupe. They honestly CAN lay claim to being our own ?“Neighbors?” Caf?©!
CURB PAINTING PROJECT
by Renee Ross Cefalu (Spruce)
We are READY and looking for VOLUNTEERS with this project! Are there any Scout troops in the neighborhood that need to earn merit badges? If anyone would like to put in a few hours at your convenience, your help would be greatly appreciated. Several neighbors have already called and said they wanted their homes done. Please continue to call me if you are interested at 839-8069.
Sample homes with the finished product may be scattered in the beginning ?– LOOK for them. We will begin in the 3000 block of Spruce Street and by the 2nd week in May, you should begin seeing them.
PORTOBELLO QUALIFIES FOR SPEED HUMPS
by Nancy Borg (Portobello)
Portobello Avenue has received more than the 70% of yes signatures needed for speed humps. Thanks to Linda Murphy for getting the required ones on Spruce. Now comes the hard part. First the City of Mesa would like to contact the two homeowners (out of 74) who did not sign the survey and next they will contact the homeowners of the rental properties for their opinion. In the meantime the City will evaluate Portobello for the placement of the speed humps.
Due to the homeowners who said that they would like to see speed humps on Portobello, but did not want to have the humps within 50 feet of their property, the WEST end of Portobello may NOT get a speed hump. This will mean that cars have more opportunities to speed there than at the center and east ends of the street.
This process should take no more than one month and we will see the new speed humps being installed. I will do my best to keep all residents on Portobello up-to-date on the process. If you have any questions please contact Nancy Borg at 480-897-7749.
Just a note, Bret and I really enjoyed meeting all of the other 72 residents who were surveyed. It was a great opportunity to get out and meet some of you who we have not met until the last couple of months.
A Special Thanks
by Becky Chvarak (Pampa)
I want to publicly thank Jeff Owens for answering my call for help in the last newsletter. He has gone far and beyond the call of ?“duty?”. He has spent his days painting the exterior of my home in the heat, been attacked by a family of wasps, chased by a huge woodbee and been my exterior consultant.
Thank you Jeff for your humbleness and all your hard work expecting nothing in return but a ?“Thank You.?” God bless and always grateful.
AVON CALLING ...
How familiar does this sound to you? Diane Geshkewich (Pecos) 756-0437, has been selling Avon in our neighborhood for almost a year now. Just last month, she has made the commitment of placing an Avon product in our Welcome Baskets. You won?’t have to go far for any of these items!
GARAGE SALE SIGNS
A most successful Neighborhood Garage Sale ?– March 31. I am not sure of every street ?– but Posada was just ?“chucky jammed full?” of cars! Adam Mark (Posada), who is in the printing business, provided the professional signs at our entrances. Thanks Adam and Heather. There were certainly lots of other signs at all of our entrances ?– not sure who all put them out ?– but the neighbors thank you all.
MARLBOROUGH MESA CELEBRATES EASTER IN AN 'EGGCEPTIONAL WAY'
by Kelly Wendel (Posada)
It started out as a simple enough idea: Why don't we do something special for the children in the neighborhood? Several hundred eggs and lots of fun later, people are still talking about the Great Marlborough Mesa Easter Egg Hunt, recently held at our local park on Saturday, April 14.
More than 300 neighbors brought their families and
their children for a morning and afternoon of fun, with neighborhood volunteers banding together to make the whole event a fabulous success.
Children of all ages had a chance to "hunt" for eggs, with some special eggs bringing lucky egg hunters bigger prizes, including four grand prizes. Winners Kaleb Herbert (Posada), Austin Kelly (Peralta), Andrew Cadman, (Spruce) Zoraya Manzo, (Wycliff) and all walked away with well-stocked Easter Baskets full of prizes. Children at the hunt also won other special prizes, as well as receiving their own bag of goodies.

sumptuous baked goods prepared by Marlborough
Residents capped of the event, with families lingering in the park throughout the rest of the afternoon.
"This came together in a spectacular way," said Mesa City Councilman Dennis Kavanaugh, who attended the event. "We use this neighborhood as an example of making contact with your neighbors. This is truly a model neighborhood, and because of what people have, property values are up and people really want to move into this neighborhood."
Of course, any event doesn't happen without a lot of planning, hard work and sweat. A volunteer committee of neighbors started planning the event months ago. Linda and Mike Murphy teamed up to coordinate the event, which was funded by a grant obtained from the Mesa United Way by Renee Coelho. Other crucial volunteers included: Aimee Gipper; Alma & Jim Jones; Becky Chvarak; Bob & Lolita Gates; Debbie & Don Glick; Diane & Chris LeFevre; Michelle & Andy Germanis; Monette Coyle; Robin & Jerry Gipper; Sandy & Mike Scully and Thaine Crown. Our neighborhood teens also aided in the event, with various duties. Some of them were: Aimee Gipper, Sara and Krista Glick and Lindsay EmBree. The Easter Group2001 committee wants to thank everyone who helped in any fashion at the event itself.
"We had such a wonderful time. It was just great to get out with the neighbors, and our daughter just loved the Easter Egg Hunt," said Monette Coyle, who attended the event with her daughter Avalon. "I can't wait to do it next year. I think we had such a successful first time that I am anxious to see how it will all turn out next year."
(Note: Marty Klopper now has all Easter pictures on the website under the Neighborhood Photos page ?– including the Grand Prize winners.)
Neighborhood Vandalism
By Naomi Mills (Posada)
Lately there has been more car ?“crimes of convenience?” in our neighborhood. Our burglaries were higher at the end of March than they were in February. There were car burglaries on Spruce and Portobello. These were cars either unlocked or parked in driveways and not inside garages making for an easier entrance.
Billie on Emerson called and her niece was parked on the street with a lot of ?“things?” visible. The burglary happened after midnight. They used a ?“slim jim?” to gain entry and took everything in the glove compartment and trunk as well.
An ?“attempted?” car burglary happened in the 3100 block of Spruce. The thieves were not able to obtain entrance due to the watchful eye of a good neighbor.
On Beverly Circle a Chevy suburban was stolen right out of the garage between 7:35AM and 8:00AM the week of March 26th. The garage door was open. One roommate had just left at 7:35am and when the other one came out at 8:00 his car was gone!
If there are others that know something more, please post them on the website or email me at njm380@juno.com. I will be keeping tabs on them.

We also wish to thank everyone in complying with City rules regarding overloading and restricted items inside our Clean Sweep Containers. It is our hope to have them back again in October.
JUST A NOTE ...
Jim and I will be taking a somewhat ?“easier?” summer ?… the June/July and the Aug/Sept issues of the newsletter will be combined as they were last year.
