NEIGHBORHOOD GARAGE SALE
Saturday, May 6, 2000
This can count as one of your Blockwatch Events Join the fun, get rid of you junk and make money too!

Several people have wanted to use the Neighborhood Sale as a fund raiser in part, with a percentage of profits going to our sign fund. Spruce Street Block Leaders, Linda and Mike Murphy, have ask anyone participating on their street to please donate $10 from their profits.

Whatever your block "dreams up" is the order of the day. Some people will be selling coffee and doughnuts ?… some cold pop ?… some to sell tickets for our 50/50 Raffle to be held MAY 20, 2000. That jackpot is getting HUGE! Many people in the neighborhood are already selling tickets.

This should be a big event, since it is spring and "Spring Clean Up" is happening everywhere! We know everyone realizes it will be a very busy day with a lot of traffic - we just need to prepare for it and be cautious about where the children are playing.

Signs for the garage sale will be posted Friday night.

FINISHED AT LAST!
If you were among those painting our Guadalupe fence March 4, you know what we accomplished. We were DONE by 9:30 am!!!! Now, keep in mind - "we had only just begun" at 7:00 and took the time to have breakfast furnished by Cecil Duarte and Greg Douthit. We learned from doing Alma School!

There was a steady stream of people manning that fence line! I think the children were even MORE involved this time - very good to see that they too, are concerned about the community they live in - those are "moments" that last a lifetime. There were 6 people who "prepped" the used brick pillars to insure that those were not painted also. Thanks go to everyone who participated in whatever capacity.

FOCUS GROUP
By Becky Claycomb (Posada)
The Focus Group 2000 members have met 2 times in April to organize the neighborhood 50/50 raffle to raise the remaining funds needed for the Marlborough Mesa signs.

Ticket sales have begun! Neighbors throughout the community have begun selling tickets for the raffle. Tickets are $1 each or 7 for $5. The group has had such enthusiasm for the raffle that we are sure to have a large sum for the winner as well as for the sign fund.

Would you like to sell tickets? Would you like to take tickets to work, sell to friends, family and co-workers? If so, please contact our ticket coordinator Cecil Duarte at 602-208-2181 and leave your name and phone number - he will get you tickets. You may also ask any member of the Focus Group for more information. Their names are listed on our homepage in the Discussion area.

Flyers are also being distributed re: "Pig out at the Park", our neighborhood party May 20th, 2000. The raffle drawing will be held at that time as well as the Silent Auction. Silent Auction donations are pouring in and are sure to be a real treat for everyone. If you have something you would like to donate to the Silent Auction, please contact a member of the Focus Group.

The next Focus Group meeting will be Tuesday, April 25th, from 6:30-7:30 pm at Rositas on Guadalupe and Dobson. They also have great chips, dips and munchies!

This group is an open neighborhood meeting and anyone interested in the betterment of our community is invited and encouraged to attend.

THIS IS A "SIGN" of a NEIGHBORHOOD WORKING TOGETHER
by Kelly Wendel (Posada)
Independent Newspapers Staff Writer
More than 150 residents at Marlborough Mesa turned out for the unveiling of the first ever entrance sign. The neighborhood is 22+ years old and have never had signage at their entrances previously. The development has no homeowner association, so this has been quite an impressive achievement.

The money was raised for the signs through volunteers and neighbors who donated money for the cause, which was spearheaded by Jim and Alma Jones, who also manage their website. The neighbors also received a United Way Pride Grant.

"I think the turnout was terrific, even better than I had anticipated," said Alma, "and I tend to think big anyway."

The neighborhood website has made communicating possible throughout the 469 homes. The website is: neighborhoodlink.com/mesa/marlborough/ It has drawn the neighborhood together to achieve common goals. Every week, more people join the growing email list. This provides instant notification of any crisis, problem or achievement that may occur. Most things though, are simply posted on their website in the Discussion area or the Community Calendar. It is a well-used site. In March alone, it had over "4500 hits".

Despite the fact Marlborough Mesa has no established homeowner's association, residents banded together and raised the funds needed for this first sign. Their second sign will be placed at Guadalupe and Emerson and they have collected quite a large sum already for that one. Neighbors worked since September, 1999 to accomplish the goal. A third sign is planned for Pampa and Alma School Road, and neighbors are already talking about a fourth one to go on the north side of their main entrance at Pecos and Alma School.

The sign unveiling event, held on Saturday, April 1, 2000, was attended by Dennis Kavanaugh, Mesa Councilman, and Debbie Driscol and family from Mesa's Neighborhood and Community Assistance Office, as well as friends, neighbors and families.

"What you've done here as a community shows how you have overcome the obstacles of not having a formal homeowners association," Councilman Kavanaugh said. "This neighborhood is a model and something we want to build upon. It's an example of the right recipe, the right ingredients, and the right chefs."

After the sign unveiling and photos by the Tribune, the neighbors drifted over to their park for food and conversations. Both organizers and residents were impressed by the turnout, not to mention the can-do attitude of the entire neighborhood.

"It really showed how this neighborhood can pull together and get things done," said longtime resident Jeanne Pratt. "I was very happy to see the crowd out there."

This isn't the neighborhood's first time at uniting. In the past, neighbors have painted their exterior walls along Alma School Road in November of 1999 and the Guadalupe Road one in March of 2000 in preparation for their signs. Last year they had a "Spring Spruce Up" and spruced up the yards of local residents. They also have hosted many Blockwatch Parties, G.A.I.N. Parties, and in-the-street New Year's Eve Parties to name just a few.

"This is such a great neighborhood and we really lucked out moving in here," said Monette Coyle, who recently moved into Marlborough Mesa with her husband in December, 1999. "The people are so nice, and everybody is so involved. It's like having all the benefits of a small town in a big city."

OUR NEWEST AMBASSADORS ARE ...
Earnestine and Archie Harrison of Pecos. They are now part of our "Welcome Wagon" here in Marlborough. But that is nothing new the Harrisons - they always have been! That brings us to a total of 7 couples. If you know of someone moving in - call 831-1525. One of our Ambassadors will take them a Welcome Packet.

INTRODUCING ?… RENEE' COELHO
Renee' has graciously offered her time and talents to help me with our ever-growing website. She has extensive background in the computer industry for over 35 years. Her knowledge will prove invaluable to our community. Her email address, fax and phone number is: Ladyspirit48@yahoo.com
Phone 480-831-1525 Fax: 480-831-5244

Renee' will begin by offering 3 new Community Pages:
1) Lost and Found: If you have lost or found something and want it posted, she will post it there for 60 days, or until it is returned, whichever is first. 2) Babysitting Connection: This is a two-part section - one for babysitters and one for adult volunteers who would list their phone number to be called if a babysitter needs an adult answer or help with an emergency. When we get enough babysitters to sign up, if they have not taken the Babysitter and CPR classes, we will offer those for all who wish to be involved. We want this to be a "quality" program for all those who need someone to sit for their children. 3) Classified Section: This is for any goods you want to buy or sell - just like the "classifieds" in the newspaper. This is NOT intended for businesses.

When you would like Renee' to post something for you, please call, fax or email her at the above numbers. Please include your name, phone, address and email (if applicable).

THE MARLBOROUGH SINGLES
By Renee' Coelho (Posada)
There are several single homeowners in Marlborough Mesa. We would like to start a Singles Group where we could enjoy meeting other people, and have some activities to do together here in our neighborhood. If you are interested in something like this, please call Gary Fossell (Portobello) at 480-756-1194.

Gary will host our 1st get together at his 2-story home in his backyard with a barbeque/potluck. The date will be May 13, 2000. Call Gary if you would like to attend. He needs to know how many to plan for. He will provide the soft drinks and chicken

This is a NO AGE LIMIT group - so don't be afraid to join in. Everyone coming will indeed be single - just like you! We could meet, plan some events, create a group effort in our community, and generally have a great time.

OUR NEWSLETTER AND WEBSITE
Many people in our neighborhood are now using the Discussion area of our website to inform others of events on their street. There are various ideas popping up continually.

This is the place to present the "facts" and to "inform" everyone of things going on around us throughout the many streets and "faces" of Marlborough. So many of you have provided information that I could not possibly have knowledge of. When you have something that the entire community would benefit from - I encourage you to put it in that Discussion area.
neighborhoodlink.com/mesa/marlborough/

If you have NOT yet sent me your name and email address, please do so. You will receive only important information pertaining to our neighborhood like the recent stolen license plates one that was sent to all who are on the email list. Apparently, there is a group of people stealing license plates off cars, and replacing it with one from stolen cars. Do you know your license plate number? There is little room here for details - email me and I will send that message in its entirety. I was made aware of this via Debbie and John Nettles. John is a Mesa Detective.
