NEW WALGREEN'S UPDATE

Procedures continue to fall into place for the new Walgreen?’s to be built on the NE corner of Guadalupe and Alma School Roads.

Two public meetings will be held:
1. Design Review Board ?– Aug. 4 at 3:30 pm on the Lower level of the City Council Chambers, 57 E. First Street in Mesa.

2. Site Plan Modification ?– Aug. 10, 2004 at 4:00 pm on the 1st floor Planning Division Conference Room, 20 E. Main Street.

DAIRY QUEEN UPDATE
By Robin Gipper

The Dairy Queen is still planning to move to the north half of the vacant lot next to Nello's on Alma School Rd across from our entrance on Pecos.

Due to difficulty with the owner of the Nello's building, Mr. Escobedo has decided not to purchase the entire vacant lot. He also modified the building plan for a smaller building. With these recent changes it is hoped that ground breaking could take place this year.

CONSUMER ALERT!
McDonald?’s Health Violations

There are some serious health violations at the 2665 S. Alma School McDonald?’s. Count them ?– 3 ?– yes, three recent violations from the Maricopa County Health Department. to clean up or have their license revoked. This was the report of the Channel 15 Investigators. However, this report does not show up yet on the Maricopa County site. July?’s violations have not yet been posted. But ?…

6-14-04 there was 1 violation.
6-4-04 there were 5 violations. Score: 32
out of 100 points (very bad).
12-10-03 there were 3 major violations
and 1 repeat. Score: 37

You can find out this information on www.maricopa.gov then click on restaurant ratings.

You may want to look (or ask) for their health certificate the next time you go in, as many of our children are eating there.

BANK OF AMERICA
GRANT APPLICATION

Shawna Carey (Spruce St.) will be writing a grant application for MM in the amount of $5,000. Bank of America has several grants available and are giving them to qualified ?“Local Heroes?”.

If selected, we would receive that grant using Mesa United Way as our fiscal agent since we are not a non-profit.

We should know more by the time the next newsletter is out. Thank you Shawna, for taking your time to help all of us in Marlborough.

MM LOW-FAT COOKBOOK

Before we know it ?– the holidays will be upon us! Do you have a great low-fat recipe you are willing to share? We are looking for 25 of the BEST and will be putting together a holiday version with the hope of not gaining additional pounds this season.

Send your favorites via email to jnajones@cybertrails.com or call 480-831-1525 or 602-321-1139. Deadline for submitting them is August 30, 2004. Below is a sample of how they would appear and the kind of information needed. Making those recipes simple and easy makes for happier holidays.

Baked Feta with Marinara
From the kitchen of Alma Jones (Posada)

Diced tomatoes with a pinch of basil, a pinch of oregano, and a minced garlic clove. Feta doesn?’t melt, but baking makes it creamy and spreadable. Toasted sourdough bread and rosemary focaccia are also good accompaniments. This serves a crowd well, takes a short amount of time to prepare and disappears in a flash.

1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
?¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes with basil,
garlic and oregano, drained well
1 (4-ounce) package crumbled feta cheese
Cooking spray
32 (1/2-inch-thick) slices diagonally cut French
bread baguette (about 1 pound), toasted

1. Preheat oven to 350?°
2. Combine first 4 ingredients in a bowl. Sprinkle feta evenly into a 6-inch gratin dish or small shallow baking dish coated with cooking spray. Top with tomato mixture. Bake at 350?° for 20 minutes. Serve as a spread with bread slices. Yield: 16 servings (serving size: 2 bread slices and 2 tablespoons spread)

DESIGNING FOR THE AGED
By Monica Tarrence

Recently I was asked by The Association of Interior Designers to join a team of designers to remodel a 19-unit apartment complex for abused elderly victims. The existing spaces are completely gutted.

I am designing a space that is a 550 SF and consists of a living area, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. I will be heading up Unit #9 with volunteers. My volunteers and I are trying to make each space for our client welcoming, comfortable and a safe environment. Our client will be coming to their new home with only the clothes on their backs. They will need all basics.

There is no budget given to us for this project. We are starting out with no funds or household items so we are asking you if you would be willing to donate money or items listed below. So far we have received many items from businesses like Wallpapers-To-Go, Sherwin-Williams Paint and Sleep America.

I am unable to give much detail about the project due to confidentiality and the safety of our clients but the project is being conducted by the Area Agency on Aging. If you have questions, call Dale at 602-264-2255.

Donations must be donated by the end of August and are tax deductible.

You may contact me at 480-491-6606 or thru email at desertroseint@cableaz.com regarding any questions or color choices. Thank you for any help you can provide. Items needed:

NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES

Sandra Fischer will be our new ?“Crime Stats?” collector. Every month, she will email the Police Department for those stats and place them on our website. This way, we can all know if crimes in our area have increased or decreased and what is going on around us. As another dedicated volunteer, Sandra helps with many things including the Toy Drive at Christmas, which she heads up. Thank you, Sandra, for taking on this new and added responsibility.

HELP, HELP, HELP! We still need a VOLUNTEER to pass out newsletters to 9 homes on Pampa and Wycliff (at the park) every other month.

Please call or email either Sandy or myself if you can help in ANY way. Our information is at the top left front of the newsletters.

Also, we can always use a little extra help on ALL streets to sometimes relieve those who pass them out regularly. Come on ?– walking is good for you ?– volunteering makes you feel even better.
