CELEBRATE WITH CARE IN MARLBOROUGH MESA

Ready to celebrate and show how much you care about your community?

Then be at the Marlborough Mesa Park on Saturday, Dec. 14 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for the Third Annual Marlborough Mesa Toy Drive.

Not only will our neighborhood be gathering toys for the East Valley Child Crisis Center, we will celebrate winning the ?“Spirit of Mesa Award,?” for uniting as a community and aiding the child crisis center, along with other causes.

Don?’t forget to bring an unwrapped toy for a child who otherwise may not have much for Christmas.

The East Valley Child Crisis Center is often a refuge of last resort as the holidays bring increased pressure on already fragile families. Let our ?“Spirit of Mesa?” shine through and help those who can least help themselves ?– the children.

It?’s no accident that our neighborhood won the ?“Spirit of Mesa?” award, with people like Sandra Fischer, Ellen Bretzke and Trish Baker, who have stepped up this year to plan our annual toy drive.

?“We wanted to be more involved with our neighborhood and it seemed like something we could do right now,?” said Sandra Fischer, a key organizer of the Third Annual Toy Drive.

But only from 11 a.m. to noon, so get out early for $1 photos with Santa Claus, Bob Cingel!

Food is also on the menu, with six-foot sub sandwiches on the table, and judging from previous years, lots of baked goodies from local neighbors.

Smaller children can burn some energy in an inflatable bouncy house. Net proceeds from the entire event will benefit the East Valley Child Crisis Center.

Honored guests include Mesa's Vice Mayor Kavanaugh and Deborah Driscol from the Neighborhood Office


EVENT NEEDS COMMUNITY'S HELP

There are still things the toy drive and celebration need:

Three more 6-ft. subs; coolers and ice; several cases of soda and bottles of water; three bags of potato chips and three bags of Doritos; boxes of hot cocoa; heavy paper plates and heavy duty tape.

Other items at we could use at the park are things such as garlands, a karaoke machine or some other music system that operates on batteries to play Christmas music during the event.

We also need a cleaning crew to prepare the park the morning of Dec. 14, with at least six people for about one-and-half to two hours. We also need an after party clean-up crew, about three people for a half hour. During the event, we could folks to assist with handling food and expediting things during the event.

This would be a great opportunity for a Girl Scout or a Boy Scout troop to help out our neighborhood. If you can help our neighborhood in any of these ways, please contact the appropriate task chairs by Dec. 7:

VANDALISM, THEFT RAISE CONCERNS

On Plata and Wycliff there has been some vandalism issues over the course of the last year. This has been happening ?“a little at a time?” ?– just enough to make life a little harder when?…

* Windows need repairing because they have been broken, or

* Rocks are thrown into rain gutters causing them to break from the weight.

The latest ?“project?” ?– a wooden gate ?– is being cut, torn and picked at until there is now a sizeable hole, growing on a weekly basis.

These things are usually the work of a child whose parents or supervisors are not watching closely enough. Things like this probably happen all over our neighborhood, but for certain ?– they are happening here.

Our neighborhood prides itself in working together and taking care of one another.

We need the eyes and ears of all residents watching for anyone who may be destroying other people?’s property.


TRUCK, RARE CAR STOLEN ON PLATA

Thousands of hours of work, along with an investment of thousands of dollars, was snatched from the driveway of a Plata resident on Nov. 22.

Thieves apparently smashed in the window of a 1985 yellow Chevy crew cab flat bed truck carrying an orange, 1961 Impala SS 409 sometime between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. that Thursday morning.

Clint, the owner of the car and a Plata resident, said the four-speed Bubbletop Impala was one of only 100 made.

ON THE BRIGHTER SIDE

Plata resident Kenny Wiebe created a pretty spooky Haunted House for kids in the neighborhood during the recent Halloween festivities. Lots of local children got to enjoy Kenny?’s creativity. Way to go Kenny!.


FROST FACTS
Papa John?’s Helps Out

During this busy time of year, take a break from cooking and help out your local elementary at the same time.

When you place a pizza order on Monday, Dec 16, tell Papa John?’s you are calling on behalf of Frost Elementary. The school will receive 20 percent of the profits on all sales.

So far, the program has meant $100 to $200 a month for the P.T.O., which can then buy a wide variety of things for the classrooms, including computer paper and cassette records.

The P.T.O. is also seeking help in raising $500 for the marquee at Frost Elementary, a donation from the P.T.O.

HOLIDAY GIFT BOUTIQUE

The PTO Holiday Gift Boutique is at Frost Elementary on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Get your Christmas shopping done early. A wide variety of gifts, priced from .50 cents to $10, not to mention Santa Claus, too.


SPRUCE STREET PLANS 4th ANNUAL LUMINARIES EVENT ON DECEMBER 22.

Join a tradition or start a new tradition on your street, as residents on Peralta prepare for their 4th Annual Lighting of the Luminaries, Sunday, Dec. 22.

Come enjoy the festivities and have some fun, while also helping out the neighborhood by fulfilling block watch requirements.

Or, start your own street?’s tradition. All it takes are a few plain brown bags and votive candles.


CORRECTION

In the November newsletter, a story on Halloween events stated ?“Peralta residents closed the street for a block party.?” It was actually Portobello that held the block party. The editor apologizes for any confusion. Also, every year, Pam Drury carves a mound of pumpkins with all different kinds of faces. If you have not seen her home on Portobello at Halloween, it is a must-see for next year!


NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES

Jeanne Pratt (Posada) is heading up a renovation project to the entrance side yards on Pecos and Alma School to match what the City of Mesa has already done on the corners. Watch the improvements! The project will be done in time for Christmas.


NEW FINANCE MEMBER

We have one new person on the Financial Committee for Marlborough, with one stepping down. Joining the committee is Sandra Scully, while Lolita Gates is leaving.
Lolita has served our community for a year now and feel it is time to let it go. She has also been our Clean Sweep Coordinator and she is also stepping down from that position. Kristine Malcolm will be taking her place. When it is time for those dumpsters, let?’s give Kristine our support. It is a bigger job setting that up for our entire community twice a year than one might think.


NEW AMBASSADORS

Our newest Ambassadors for the 1000 and 1100 blocks of Portobello are Linda and Mike Murphy.

They are now the owners of once run-down rental. But not anymore. The intrepid couple have put some hard work and sweat into a neglected house and the corner looks great! And the lawn!

Although there are few moving around on Extension, we still need an Ambassador for that street. If you are interested, please contact Alma Jones at 831-1525.


"CELEBRATE WITH CARE"

Cecil Duarte has graciously donated a DVD/VCR to be raffled at the Toy Drive December 14th. Proceeds will go towards the beautification of our entrance at Pecos and Alma School. You can purchase your tickets from Ellen Bretzke at 755-8618 or Alma Jones at 831-1525 OR purchase them at the Toy Drive on December 14th.

Tickets will be at 1 for $5 or 3 for $10 and the winning ticket will be drawn at 1:00 pm after our toy drive (winner need not be present to win). What a great Christmas Present for the lucky winner! Thank you Cecil!
