I just got an email from Alma re the gang threat in our neighborhood. This is very upsetting, but not insurmountable. I promised her that we'd be on the lookout and, as she said, call the police if we see anything suspicious. I hope everyone will stay a little more alert. I hope those of you with children will find a way to discuss this with them in an appropriate manner. The police might have suggestions on how to talk with your children. I feel it's important to include them, because they are, after all, the ones out playing on the street, and they might see things that we don't. Above all, reassure them, and be good examples for them. Also, I think we shouldn't hide in our houses. My spouse and I will continue to walk our dogs and do our front yard gardening. The more we are visible in our own community, the harder it is for anyone to view us as vulnerable. Last of all, I personally am a big beliver in the cell-phone. When I am outside my home, I find it makes me feel safer than any gun or suit of armor ever could. It's a great non-violent tool for dealing with crime. That's just my opinion. Thank you.

Dear Anonymous ...
Tell us who you are. You have such good thoughts and the things you say are so very true. Why keep your name a secret? Let the CAT out of the bag :)

"Anonymous" is Hansa!
I didn't mean to be anonymous! I wrote this discussion around midnight at my place of work, and I was just tired or something and I skipped entering my name. I wanted to write the message first because I wanted to get it all out of my head and into cyberspace as fast as I could, and I guess I did it a little TOO fast! I AM HANSA KERMAN PISTOTNIK, (Hansa is pronounced "Hans-ah" and I live in our great neighborhood with my husband JOHN and our two dogs and one cat. I hope that answers that! I check my email about once a week, as I don't have a computer at home...yet!

Gang Warning
I read your comments relative to the subject, and I agree the more we are visible, the harder for someone to view us as vulnerable. Most definitely when a suspicious person(s) or activity(ies)are suspected, call the police.
Let me go one step further. Let's be alert for spray-painted graffiti within the neighborhood. In some areas, people take pictures and take or send to the police. In any case, call the police. Thank you.
