Some time ago we discussed the speed problem on Emerson and other streets in the neighborhood. After those discussions I decided to see whether we could get speed humps placed on Emerson. Unfortunately, that isn't going to happen.
The first step of the process is obtaining approval from the Fire Department. Apparently, certain streets are not allowed to have speed humps because, according to the Fire Department, it impairs the ability of firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies. Emerson is one of those streets. So, unless the City changes its mind about that, there will be no speed humps on Emerson.
My hopes were actually pretty high for a day or two. Cables were placed across the road to begin the speed study -- the next step in the process. A short time later, Mike King from the Traffic Engineering Department called me to tell me that the street was not eligible for speed humps.
I suppose we have other options available to us. The Police Department can be called to run radar on your street. The City also has portable radar trailers that display the speed of the vehicles as they travel down the street. Those are also available for the asking. Again, Mr. King would have that information.
