Stolen Vehicles

FYI - In the 1000 block of Peralta on Feb. 24th sometime between 8:00 pm and 8:00 am the next morning our Nissan Maxima was stolen from our driveway. It was locked and had an alarm. It is an old car (1989) and really has no value. It may as well have been in broad daylight since we have two double motion sensor lights above our garage and our next door neighbor's motion light comes on when someone is in our driveway.

On the morning of New Year's Eve (12/31)we had an appraiser at our house. He was in our house no longer than 20 minutes. When he went outside to leave, his Honda Accord was gone. Someone stole his car while he was inside our house for the appraisal. In this instance I had a hard time feeling sorry for him as he left his keys in his car. (Of course his stolen car didn't reflect to kindly on our appraisal.)

At the end of 2003 our next door neighbors sister's Ford Explorer was stolen out of their driveway when she was visiting from California.

That is three cars stolen from two houses in a very short period of time. I have read about several other cars in MM that have been stolen in the past few months. I think it is more than a coincidence. The Mesa PD doesn't. They don't see a connection and told me all three of those cars are easy to break into and take.

We have now had a tiny camera installed above our garage. Anytime there is motion in our driveway or at our mailbox the camera automatically starts recording into our computer.

By the way, our Nissan Maxima was recovered by the Phoenix PD almost as soon as we reported it to the Mesa PD. The back driver's side was smashed out and they drilled out the ignition switch.

Vehicle Stolen

Our Dodge Dakota truck was stolen out of our driveway on March 2nd 2004 sometime between 9:00pm and 6:00am. We just moved in to this house on Plata in MM about 7 months ago and I was telling my family what a safe & nice neighborhood this is (unfortunately this happened). Also, The neighbor across the street from us got his car broken into and stereo and other items stolen.
Info

The following is a link to the National Insurance Crime Bureau that has tips on how to keep your vehicle safer from thieves:

It's basically common sense information but they also suggest a tracking device. I highly recommend LoJack - it's automatically activated when your vehicle is reported stolen and the bad guys have no clue. LoJack also now offers an Early Warning System and if your vehicle is moved without a special key fob present, they call you and let you know that your vehicle is being moved and may be stolen. Then, once the vehicle is reported stolen, LoJack is activated and the police can track it. Can't beat it!

The NICB website also has lists of the most common vehicles stolen in the U.S. and then by state. It's helpful info if you're interested.
