Two Dobson High School students died and several more were injured during a Thursday lunch-hour traffic accident a half mile from the Mesa school.
All five students packed into a Volkswagen Bug had to be extricated from the vehicle.
Passenger Krystal Ebel, 15, died at the scene. Driver Shayna Linneen, 16, was flown to a local hospital in critical condition, where she was later pronounced dead.
The three other passengers - 17-year-old Anna Shipley, 18-year-old Tyler Spurbeck and 17-year-old Robert Brecht - also were taken to hospitals.
Ebel and another passenger were not wearing seatbelts.
Chandler police say the students were heading north on Alma School Road near Summit Place at 11:47 a.m. when the car jumped a median and slammed into a palm tree. The car continued into the southbound lanes, where it was hit by a Salvation Army truck hauling donated goods.
Chad Coppinger, 34, driver of the delivery truck, and 26-year-old passenger Shawn Taylor were unharmed.
Investigators are looking a grey ''Baja-type'' car that witnesses say cut off the Volkswagen, causing the driver to swerve into the tree.
Alma School Road will be closed into the evening between Guadalupe Road and Summit Place.
